EXPERIENCE: THE BEST TEACHER

Being still inexperienced and having just made conscious
contact with God, it is not probable that we are going to
be inspired at all times.
ALCOHOLIC ANONYMOUS , p. 87

Some say that experience is the best teacher, but I believe
that experience is the only teacher. I have been able to
learn of God's love for me only by the experience of my
dependence on that love. At first I could not be sure of
His direction in my life, but now I see that if I am to be
bold enough to ask for His guidance, I must act as if He
has provided it. I frequently ask God to help me remember
that He has a path for me.

"must act as if He has provided it" sounds like rationalization for
self-will run riot, and hardly seems compatible with any concept of
rigorous honesty. If I lack a sense of direction, I don't simply "act
as if I have direction" I go talk to other people about it, try to get
some sense of perspective. I even follow the suggested direction of
"do nothing" - the right answers seem to present themselves in time,
just not always to my timetable.

my interpretation of this is quite different BM.

"acting as if" for me, was pretending, in the early days, that i BELIEVED that HP would show me the
way.........................
when i came to a sober life, i realized that i really didn't believe that GOD would help me, and so, as suggested by my
sponsor, i "acted as if" until i CAME TO BELIEVE!

Whilst it's relatively easy to act as if all is well at 8pm, isn't it
kind of hard to "act as if" at 2am when the insomnia is in full swing,
the desire for drink is causing cold sweats, and you feel there's no
way you can bother anyone else in AA at such an hour?

At such times I'd really rather have practical suggestions that I CAN
believe in, than fake a belief in a God that I can't.

WHATEVER WORKS for you BM.
but i thank AA daily , that true belief is not a requirement for membership!
the practical suggestions that you speak of, were also offered to me.
PHONE LIST, MEETINGS, READINGS, and the ability to call 24/7.
