View Full Version : Sober Living House

Gentle Readers,
2 questions:
I'm looking for a sober living house but see no such thing in the
yellow pages. What else would it be called?
I have no money and am unable to find a job (I'm living with my mom
which is a bad situation.) Is there any way an indigent person can
find a sober living environment in which to live (besides going to
jail!)?
This is bad... really bad...
Thanks, Lu
have you tried local hospitals, treatment centers etc.
you can talk to someone connected with those and ask for information
on HALF WAY HOUSES.
your local community normally has subsidy funds for this!

"Half-way house". I guess it means "half way" between 2 realities.
What's available depends on where you live Inquire with any local
drug / alcohol advisory units. AA may also have the information you
seek.

Contactact the Oxford Foundation of Canada. They have many clean and sober
houses for men and women. Treatment centers are the best way to go; as they
give a solid base to rebuild your life on; but they can take a long time to
get into. Social Services will pay for two months at an Oxford House. The
only women's treatment I know of are "Aventa" and "Youville". God Bless

I am no expert, but I think -- in the U.S. -- that the
local social services agency should be your first call.
Expect to dial 10 or twenty times after that.
It will take some time. Be calm and patient. And
insistent.

Look up AA in your local phone book and call them. Someone will be either
to tell you who to call or where you can go.
God Bless,

The Salvation Army Operates a shelter for such. Unfortunately it is men
only at this point, and you did not mention your gender. They are also a
church. Many do not know this. Check with them.

You do not say where you are, but if you have no dependents, you could try a
catering job with accommodation.
Another short term solution might be a retreat. In exchange for some help
around the place, you might be able to stay free. Many retreats ask you
just to pay what you can afford.

Having lived in the open, and in various types of temporary bushland
structures, I took your plight lightly, at first. Must you be
dependent on others?
Have you ever considered your very own bushland adventure? I can't
believe the reality would be any more dangerous for anyone than city
living can be. Actually, with benefit of hindsight, bush living proved
safer for me. I did most of it in the tropics though, where winter is
not a problem.
One "house" of mine was built with an axe, small coils of fencing wire
and rope, a part roll of orange visqueen membrane and saplings. I
can't remember buying anything but may have bought the visqueen, and
scrounged the rest.
A shovel and crushed antbed made a great raised floor. The southern
wall, and the front (and only) door was made like a roller sun awning,
with the plastic rolled around a smoothed cut of sapling, and rolled
down at night. It was all rather romantic in my eyes, and my eyes are
the only ones I needed.
Another popular option for indigent independence is caretaking on a
boat, if you live anywhere near the water.
As a last resort, you could always plead exceptional need and try for
a church subsidised rehabilitation facility.

Thank you for sparing me from saying that myself. It's not actually
that I don't love this idea; it just doesn't seem very realistic, nor
is it especially pertinant to my question.
Thanks to all for you help.
I'm back on day one and pretty mixed up.

I'm not sure what you mean by a retreat... The "spiritual" retreats
I've looked into in this place actually cost more than a Bahaman
vacation...

A follow-up:
I have no idea where you live, but my experience with the
social service folks has been very good. It is a
bureaucracy to be sure, but most of the people do care,
and they do have resources. Getting thru the maize is the
problem, but it can be done.
Do *not* understate your problems. They basically react
only to emergencies.

Fear at even the thought of relatively free and independent living is
commonplace. Nevertheless, your circumstances were not especially
clarified, were they.

I'm based in the UK. There is a Good Retreat Guide by Stafford Johns (or
something like that) I bought a while back. These are non commercial places
of rest and healing for quiet contemplation/getting your life back/renewal
whatever and I remember a few charged very little and some just asked you to
pay what you could afford.
