The downside to quiting

Well...three months sober, and if my neck tension gets much worse, I think I
will surgically cut off my own head. I've been on SSRI's on and off for 13
years. Anxiety/depression......was on Celexa....now on Lexapro....it seems
to be okay...but my collarbone is actually protruding from the tension.
Geez.....the good 'ol booze used to take care of that! In case there's
anyone in here with anxiety crap....it sucks!!!!

Given that alcohol is a depressant, it's not surprising to me when I
hear people describe depression in their early days after quitting
drinking. What puzzles me more is those who say they experienced no
such symptoms.

Seems clear that, whatever else is said, the ADs aren't doing the job.

I know a number of people who have good recovery from alcoholism who
were on ADs in their early days. Many found that the pills had almost
the opposite to their intended effect, hence ADs can depress. This is
true for myself, was also true for my sponsor, and for various other
people I know. Some alcoholics will realise what's happening, others
will spend a long time trying to find the right combination to "fix"
those feelings of unease and discomfort.

Maybe the solution to your problems lies elsewhere than in a packet.
That's not to say anyone should "cold-turkey" with ADs - with even the
so-called "non-addictive" ADs that can be dangerous - but weaning off
ADs, combined with working at the underlying causes (of the anxiety,
depression, etc.) - working at recovery - is an effective way of
finally finding a life alcohol- and drug-free.
