Women in AA

Hi Ladies,

I don't want to come across as sexist, but could some of the women here
e-mail me with their experiences? I don't want to join AA publicly right
now, but have gone to the AA website and read a few messages from the women
and gained insight and encouragement. I would like to hear more stories
from women to help me see their story and hopefully come out of hiding and
get myself in gear. I'm not a troll -- I just don't want to post publicly
right now. I guess I would like to jump straight to the Sponsor, but be at
home doing it.

Hi Debbie,

Your post has brought back memories of last summer when I quit
drinking and didn't want to go to AA meetings. I didn't want to go
because: I was afraid of meeting someone I knew there and what they
might think about seeing me there; I was afraid of the intimacy of
face-to-face meetings and I was afraid that once people got to know me
they wouldn't like me and I'd have to leave in order not to have to
face the "fact" that they didn't care about me.

When, eventually, I plucked up the courage to find out about AA
meetings in my area, I rang AA's Helpline number. The friendly lady
to whom I spoke, Christine, quickly made me feel at ease. When I told
her which of the meetings she'd told me about I planned to go to, she
said she would be there and that she'd look out for me.

On the day of my meeting, I initially felt excited about going to it
but fear and anxiety set in as I drove to it. Until I set foot in the
meeting room, I thought often about other things that might be more
pleasurable than an AA meeting: going home, going shopping, going for
coffee, going to the pub; going for a drive; going for a walk.

I arrived at the venue early and seeing some people sitting on a wall
outside, plucked up courage to go and say hello and to ask: "Are you
going to the meeting here at 1.00 pm ?" They said yes and in so doing
I knew they were AA folk. They did not mind me waiting with them. A
young man introduced himself and told me about his drinking history
and efforts to stay sober His easy manner made me feel instantly at
ease and in noting how he thought AA was helping him, I again thought
that AA might also be able to help me..

Christine spotted me shortly after I 'd walked into the meeting room.
She came over to say hello and ask how I was then took me over to
where they were serving coffee and introduced me to some other
members. Like the young man, John, whom I'd met outside, and
Christine, they made me feel welcome.

During the meeting, one member chose a reading from the book "As Bill
Sees it" (The AA Way of Life - selected writings of AA's co-founder)
The passage he chose was entitled "Can we choose". It lead others
to share their drinking history and knowledge/experiences of recovery.

" Can we choose". includes the statement:

"Yet, we finally did make choices that brought about our recovery".

FWIW, I've never regretted choosing to attend that AA meeting nor any
of the many meetings that I've since had the opportunity to attend.
At my meetings, usually, I see more women than men. I try to get to
two meetings each week and rarely have I gone to a meeting and not
gained any benefit from it.

if you go to EMAIL MEETINGS you will find AA meetings just for
women........................
you can remain anonymous AFTER you contact the secretary of the
meeting..............she will see to it!
