George,

I've noticed that the dragon seems to creep closer to you on some days. Why
is that? Are you being pursued by the dragon?

That's great, Kirk!!! Keep counting, one day at a time :)

I'm pleased for you, too. All the best.

Yes, it does -sort of like strolling through the aisles of a big liquor
store... You're going to hear glowing reviews of booze in those newsgroups,
from people who ostensibly don't have an alcohol problem. Maybe your mind
is beguiling you?

Actually what I got out of it was the tragedy of an unemployed man thinking
of spending $400 on a bottle of Scotch. THAT'S insanity.

He says his missus (she who must be obeyed) would give him a hard time. I
certainly hope so!

I haven't touched Scotch Whisky in 20 years. Even when I was into
"controlled" drinking I realised Scotch was bad news.

Hi Kirk. The Dragon's always been there. But he's not as close as the last
post would suggest. If I don't keep him in sight he creeps up on me real
quick.

Well done on your five days. Hang in there.

Yes, but you didn't answer the question. Why prowl amidst insanity?
Did you just happen across the group and notice something in passing,
or were you actually prowling there? If the latter, I was wondering
why. I can think of any number of good reasons to be in a bar, but I
can't think of many good reasons to be amidst a newsgroup that
presumably discusses nothing but the merits of booze. If I've
recovered from alcoholism, it would really be of little or no
interest. If not, I'd need to not be there indulging any fantasy. I
guess one reason why I might visit is to get a reminder of just how
silly the whole drinking nonsense can really be.

Yeah, I choose to strut here amidst insanity too, Blue.

George,

Not a problem. The symbolism is interesting. I picture more of a big cat
silently shadowing me. Besides, the past is past and I can only be here in
the now. Since seven years didn't make any difference before, five days is
but five days. Nothing more.

My stalker isn't a dragon, but more like Stephen King's IT. He makes
himself appear to be a happy, colorful clown cheerfully waving, beckoning.
But close up it's really a monster trying to kill. -Fred

Hi Blue Moon,
I think you'd make someone a good sponsor, if you haven't already. I didn't
answer the question, and I think it's a fair one.

I'm a newsgroupie. I've been involved with the internet since the start and
I much prefer the newsgroups to "surfing" the net. I've been to hundreds of
different groups. I got plans for my grand-daughter's playhouse from
rec.woodworking. I fixed my grandmother's phonograph with links from
rec.antiques.radio+phono. But most groups I visit once and never visit
again. The scotch whisky group was one of them.
Alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.fetish.armpits was another, and no, don't even
ask. Please!

I understand the reason for your question. I'm doing all right, really. I
know that my history from the 1980s is not perfect and it doesn't stand up
to the scrutiny of people who have decades of sobriety, but I am quite
content and the Dragon is as far away as he will go.

This whole situation (whether I have a reason for being on a whisky
newsgroup) reminds me of a post I found on 3do.bad-attitude - another
little-known, but great, newsgroup:

Bear Hunting
Roger just got a new rifle and is all excited about it. So, he goes bear
hunting in Alaska. The first bear he sees is a little brown bear, and he
kills it with his first shot. There is a tap on his shoulder, and he turns
around to see a big black bear. The black bear says "You've got 2 choices.
One, I maul you to death or Two, we have sex." Roger bends over for the
bear. He's sore for 2 days, but he recovers and vows revenge. Roger heads
out on another trip to Alaska and he finds the black bear and kills him. At
that moment there is a tap on his shoulder. A huge grizzly is standing right
behind him. The grizzly says, "That was a big mistake. You've got 2 choices,
"Either I maul you to death or we have sex." Roger bends over. He survives,
but he's really hurting and takes quite a bit of time to recover, and, he's
outraged. Sure enough, he heads back to Alaska and finds the grizzly and
shoots him at point blank range. There's a tap on his shoulder. He turns
around to find an enormous polar bear, and the polar bear says; "You don't
really come here for the hunting, do you?"

I'll let you come to your own conclusions........

Regards,
George
