View Full Version : Just quit drinking... going antsy!

I've been reading postings from this group on and off for the past
year. I've been a quiet reader of threads during that time, perhaps
too ashamed by my own vulnerabilities to discuss what all (most) of
you have been talking about.

At 28, I'm married and have three young children. I've only recently
begun realizing the need to curb my addictive habits. Although I
wasn't an "angry drunk", I really relied on alcohol to achieve that
chill effect which seemed to dominate most of my non-working life for
the past 10+ years.

I haven't had a drinkin a few days and am bored stiff What does the
sober world do to pass the time when booze isn't around?

ferly,
first of all, WELCOME out of lurkdom!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, yes, i remember the boredom well.

it was only after sobering up, that i realized i "rewarded" myself
on a regular basis, after each and every accomplishment.
get the housework done? drink!
get the laundry done? drink! and on and on and on.

no reward? i stopped doing most things!
:)

my sponsor worked with me on this boredom thing. we worked on
making lists, (small ones) and getting stuff accomplished, and THEN
finding sitters and then finding more AA meetings for me to attend
on a daily basis.

we also worked on "planning some plans" (versus projecting results)
possibly going back to school, increasing my hours working outside
of the home, getting involved in more community volunteer work.

first things first though........................go slow in your
recovery, reach out to recovery groups, find your support and use
it!

again, welcome!

28, Married with three children and you cannot find anything to do?

You are really looking are you? Try being a participating dad and assisting
husband in that spare time - that should keep you pretty busy.

I have three little girls myself. They make my heart melt. And they
will certainly keep you busy. But I still find it important to reserve
a little bit of 'me' time. And also some all important time with my
wife. It's usually not much, but it's important anyway.

My 'me' time today, for example, just started now, at 11:50. I spent
some time with my wife earlier watching politicians. But that's besides
the point. The point is that you have to pay attention to yourself, and
not just your chores. Which I'm guessing Bobby would agree with, but
when I first read this, it didn't come across that way.

As for how to spend 'me' time... I dunno, I guess I've always had the
opposite problem. There are so many damn things I want to do, it drives
me crazy that I don't get to sit down and do anything until I'm almost
in bed and too tired to really do my interests justice.

Save the money you don't spend on alcohol, buy an instrument, and learn
how to play it. A guitar. A harmonica. You're only 28. You probably
won't become famous, but maybe you'll be able to fight back against the
cacophony of electronic toys. If you win, let me know.

Best.

I too went through the "boredom", not having any kids, and being a terrible
insomniac (ESPECIALLY while sober).

I found some courses at the local community college--intersting ones that have
absolutley NOTHING to do with my degree. It provided a lot of sanity, and
still does.

It was pretty strange, being a PhD candidate, and taking like, furniture
re-upholstery, then I took welding and fabrication (GOD, that was a fun and
totally cool class), stained glass (cool too--made a very nice replacement pane
for the transom I destroyed at my fiance's studio in a drunken rage!).....

The instrument idea is good too. You can get a nice acoustic guitar for about
$150 (look for maybe an epiphone, or even an alvarez). By my personal
calculations, that was about 10 days worth of drinking!

hang in there. It would be better for you to get addicted to playing mindless
video games or something than to go back to drinking.
