The Other Harry

At my detox program, there was guy who made his bed in military
fashion. It was always perfect. Square corners, eveything tucked
in just right.
I asked him about that. At the detox program, that was not
required. Neat was good enough.
This guy was not simply neat. He was perfect. Alcoholic
perfectionism. Black guy, which only proves that we are the same.
He told me that his grandmother had taught him to make beds that
way.
After he left, I figured that this was a tradition that belonged to
to the room. Anyone who occupies that room does it right.
I started doing that. Then I explained to a new room-mate why I was
doing it.
Two months later - this being a one week program -- I went back for
an AA meeting and checked out the room. The beds were perfect.

Off course, as usual, you probably drank to that.

Having done something very much like that myself, let me say there were days
when the only thing I could hold onto and keep from going completely insane
was making that bed with hospital corners and pulling that sheet and
horse-blanket just as tight as I could get it. And yes, you could bounce a
corner off it. Sometimes going to back to basics can save some sanity.
Sometimes it was the only thing I could find that told me I was alright.
