KEN MACKILLOB

I'm new to this group and i really want to stop drinking but am finding it
difficult to stop.
I drink beer nightly, 8 to 12 cans.
I get angry very quickly these days, on the verge of a divorce and I have a
7 mo old new baby. everyone's suffering due to my own selfish behavior. I
truly want to stop.
any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Ken

Suggest you go to the next available AA meeting, work the Steps, and
do a little something each day that is not self-centred.

"Here are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery:
1 We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become
unmanageable.
2 Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to
sanity.
3 Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as
we understood Him.
4 Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5 Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature
of our wrongs.
6 Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7 Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8 Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make
amends to them all.
9 Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so
would injure them or others.
10 Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly
admitted it.
11 Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact
with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us
and the power to carry that out."

I an not yet successful myself, so whether I should be giving
anyone else advice is questionable. I do it anyway.
-- The thing that has been the most helpful to me so far was
attending a detox program. I am fortunate to live in a county
where there is an excellent one week program. One week is
not really long enough for me, but it showed me a lot of the
basics.
-- AA works well for many people. The discipline of attending
an AA meeting each night also helped me.
-- Seeing a shrink. I am just starting on this, but I figure
it can't hurt.
-- Breaking out of the customary daily routine. I think part
of drinking (for me) is simply habit.
Good luck! Just in posting your message here, you have taken
a good first step.

Neither needing, let alone forgetting, to add anything at all, I did pause
for a second to wonder though. What would a non alcoholic like Jonathan want
to recover from? Heterophobia, or his dependence on happy pills? With
delusions such as those, I wouldn't bet on his chances of recovery anyway.

" Moderate drinkers have little trouble in giving up liquor entirely if they
have good reason for it. They can take it or leave it alone.
Then we have a certain type of hard drinker. He may have the habit
badly enough to gradually impair
him physically and mentally. It may cause him to die a few years before his
time. If a sufficiently strong reason-ill health, falling in love, change of
environment, or the warning of a doctor-becomes operative, this man can also
stop or moderate, although he may find it difficult and troublesome and may
even need medical attention. "

Curious timing, Bobby! Ignoring any personality conflicts, Robert's
post which you responded to was entirely relevant in the exploration
of one's alcoholism, and apparently is not about Robert at all.

Ken,
I just saw your message and can relate to everything you wrote. I've been sober
for 8 week, after 34 years of heavy drinking. When I finally decided it was time
to quit I was jobless on the verge of having my wife ask me to leave and a
physical and mental mess.
I laid on the downstairs sofa one morning at 4:30 am after drinking a fifth of
PA (190 proof) and two fifths of Smirnoff's in a four day period. I cried my
heart out and begged God to kill me, he didn't! Instead at noon that day I
checked myself into a detox center and spent 5 days there, when I called my wife
to tell her where I was she cried and thanked me.
The day I was released I went directly to church and cried and prayed, then I
went to an A.A. meeting and got a sponsor.
These last 8 weeks have been the best of my life and I happy as hell to be
sober, I guess I really did forget what it was like.
BTW:
We're still married and once again a happy couple and my daughter calls me
'Daddy' again.
Go to A.A.
Read the Big Book
and
Don't drink.
God will give you the power to do it if you really want it and ask him
God Bless,
Kevin
