View Full Version : What am I doing here?

It's a beautiful sunny afternoon in the Great White North. The sky is a
cloudless blue, it's 7 degrees above zero (a heatwave up here) and I have
the afternoon off. I drove home, switched on the computer, checked my
E-Mail, clicked on ARAA, and suddenly thought "What am I doing here?"
Then I remembered what I would have done in April, the month before I
hitched a ride on the ARAA Magical Mystery Wagon. I would have enjoyed a
leisurely drive to an inn on the edge of town, then proceeded to get just
drunk enough that I could weave my way home with a good chance of evading
the known police checkpoints. Once home I'd start on the wine (good stuff,
none of your Canadian rubbish), and I'd pass out somewhere between 10 and
midnight. Then it would be thirst, heartburn and trench mouth till dawn and
another morning hangover foloowed by coffee after coffee.
Today I drove home instead and worked my way through the unread messages -
the thoughtful posts, the angry ones, the newcomers, the regulars. I see a
bit of myself in every one. Especially Harry, our latest town drunk. It
pains me to see his posts, because every one of his excuses were whispered
to me by the Dragon long, long ago.
So I look out of my window on a nice sunny day, and I am well content. I
guess I do know what I'm doing here. I'm staying well away from the Dragon.

Ahhhh, the "dragon", the "beast", "King Alcohol" RR, "Smart Recovery, AA. Or
any amalgamation that works. The "vehicle matters little if da proof of da
puddin' is that happy, free, and joyous, that some of us babble about.
Dare I say, like a good martini used to be, the ingredients were always the
same, the only significant difference applied by the "mixologist", and that
to our personal taste.
I recognize a good day now, whether I "hear" it or live it, and I heard
yours. They're all subtly different, and from a qualitative stance evoke
that, "my worst day sober is better than my best day drunk" gratitude. Not
so shabby m'man.

George, I simply refuse to have bad ones anymore. There are "great" days,
"good" days, and "interesting" days. All I have to do is figure which is
which, and act appropriately.
