View Full Version : Why do it?
The Other Harry
11-22-2003, 11:40 AM
There are 6 or 7 people who regularly post here who basically
all throw rocks at each other and at us newbies.
Why?
You know who you are. You claim to be sober, but if you are
doing that --- which you are -- then you are less sober than I
am.
It is not good. There are people who could use help in this
newsgroup. You are preventing them from getting it. You may
not be preventing it, but you aren't helping. You could.
My take is that you have frustrations which have built up over
having quit drinking. You have become sanctimonious and angry.
That is not sober. Not to me.

Those who know what they're doing would have no need to justify or
defend it. For me, if friendly pats on the head were sufficient to
get and keep me sober I'd not have ended up alcohol dependent in the
first place.

Really?

What's your definition of "help"? For a while I detested a couple of
the men who actually helped me more than most. One was a guy in an AA
meeting who dared tell me, openly in the meeting so everyone else
could hear, to "keep it in the day" when I was expressing alcoholic
fear about Christmas. The other used to laugh at his own jokes when I
didn't find him remotely funny.
Once I was able to get beyond personal prejudice and seek the
principle beyond the personality, I was able to see that these people
made sense and really knew how to live sober.

What do you call "sober", if it's not "habitually abstemious in the
use of alcoholic liquors or drugs"?
I also used to have the black/white thinking of "sober = well-behaved"
or something. But we ain't perfect. The difference is, we who are
both sober and recovered from the obsession with alcohol get to learn
how it is to live without having to be perfect.
Sometimes, it plain sucks. But that's life.
But stop and think a moment ... if everyone who recovered from
alcoholism was perfect, how could you possibly bridge that gap?

Probably as one of those 6 or 7 I could not agree more - mea culpa. I am
afraid I have been drawn into the insult swapping since several others
either infuriate me with their attitudes or respond to rather vicious
insults hurled in my direction.
There is no solution that I can see - I too was a sweet innocent when I
first posted to the group and now.....;-)
The only thing to do is post and take the responses that are helpful and
constructive, and if preferred then mail them directly. The rest of the
post you can either laugh at or send straight to the trash. Look for the
positive posters of which there are many.

Dear Harry - If you wish to be rid of that type of thing my best answer is
AA meetings. See - when AA began they experienced exactly what you are
complaining about. The twelve traditions and other features were then
created to remove some of the argument points. The important thing is that
the AA program is designed to take a person from what you deplore to what
you see as OK. In the process one will find both extremes in the same group
however. Money, e.g. was sort of played down in importance and a few other
principles built in. The twelve steps I see as the road and the twelve
traditions the fence along the side to keep one from wandering of from the
main road.
The posters in this group is however quite normal IMHO and fairly represents
any recovery group anywhere. That the lack of privacy and the black on white
text makes them sometimes stand out as seemingly brutal is however a fact.
The same black on white emphasises truths and wisdom, which is also found
here very nicely. It might sound tongue in cheek but I would wager that if
you learn how to stay sober here you will be able to stay sober anywhere!
I love all the personalities here and owe my sobriety to groups like them
including this group. In knowledge of my own imperfections lies hidden
perfection.
There are certain critical rules to life, e.g. keep on breathing. The same
is true for recovery from alcoholism and I would say that honesty is one of
the ways to keep on breathing. If a person share his honest believe it is
OK. When a person shares sucked up, ulterior motive, money or power hungry
brainwashing it is not so OK but be just be more aware for that in this
group with no traditions than in say an AA group. Many times an honest
'drunk' opinion might sound like a message from hell, which it probably is.
I always try to see myself in that and sometimes react, from love, in a way
that was very prophylactic for me.
My advice is not to duck the rocks but ignore them. They are not rocks, just
computer generated likenesses.
Kind regards
Mias

Harry,
I'm wondering whether you think that people who have told you that you
will neither get sober nor stay sober for very long if you do not not
want to stop drinking, are throwing rocks at you ?

LOL. Are you saying that you had no choice. That other people
*forced* you to behave as you did? If that is what you're saying,
you're talking twaddle.

JB - when a new poster appears on here I try and help. If you look back
you will see this - when someone recently asked for advice about
stopping, I recommended they consult their doctor and lay in vitamins
and food replacements. I will take all newcomers at face value and offer
any advice I believe to be helpful - that is part of the purpose of this
ng I believe. Some I then correspond with privately - as I have with you
before. When it comes to the cabal, who yell 'faggot' constantly I feel
no need to be any more restrained than they are. If they stop hurling
anti-gay abuse I shall feel no need to respond.
Are you going to ask them why they use such gratuitous insults?

Hi,
If I wanted to ask anyone why says something that I think is
insulting, why they said it, I would. My silence should not be
viewed as a sign that I agree with whatever has been said.

Nor that I like what has been said.
Jonathan Bratt wrote:

Why that's because they're so rigorously honest. So far I've managed
to pin down rigorous honesty as something which mainly includes
hostility and bigotry. I'm still working on it, though.

If you are trying to find out whether I am anti-gay, the answer is
No. I am as sick and tired of comments that relate to your sexuality
as I am about Rosie's behaviour.
FWIW, all I can do when I read something that I don't like is work out
the best way of dealing with it for me.

Yes, I would - are you telling me that.
Bad form to laugh at your own jokes I know, but looking at those names -
they should form a law firm. What was that one in the Marx brothers:
Shyster, Flywheel and Shyster or something like that. They could
specialise in civil rights law....;-)

My dad has a yacht. It doesn't have to be big 'n' expensive to be a
yacht. From the descriptions I've read, I'm in no doubt that Robert
has a yacht. I'm also in no doubt it's irrelevant to alcoholism :)
(though it could be called a benefit of sobriety).

Jeez, I already answered!
Spose I can't beat a faggot on a mission. So much for "If you can't beat em,
join em." Guess I'd be really fucked if I joined that lot, eh! One of those

This time the word faggot was not at all intended to be used only

Even if you had spelled the word correctly, your post would not

What is it that you have about gays, anyhow? This is supposed
to be a newsgroup about alcoholism. We may and we do bring
other issues here, but they should not become avenues for

I use a face to face sponsor.

"Many"?
As I recall, though I don't read all posts, you are the only person
who instructed anyone here to have a face-to-face sponsor. So what's
with this "many" you refer to, or are you the Queen of England?
What is a sponsor? To my mind, a recovery sponsor is simply someone
who has worked the Steps outlined in the Big Book, and can explain how
that program is worked to those who struggle to comprehend the book
and thus need some help. I realise that this definition could
disqualify you as a sponsor, however that realty doesn't invalidate
the definition.
To restrict recovery to "face-to-face only" flies in the very face of
the reason (other than money) why the book was written in the first
place ... to reach those alcoholics who otherwise couldn't be reached
in person. Online AA is really an extension of that concept.
If anyone thinks that having an online sponsor or only using AA online
is an "easier softer way" or some other cop-out from what they really
need to do, they'll probably drink again, with or without a sponsor,
and with or without a face-to-face sponsor. Thus I don't anticipate
online recovery improving the percentage chances of success even
though the idea of recovery reaches more people. But given the people
who recover without any "face-to-face" sponsors, some of whose stories
are in the Big Book, the chances of recovery appear to be no less
either.
So I suggest you actually read the Big Book, and comprehend the
historical reasoning behind its existence.

She's just pissed because she knows your sponsor isn't RRAP itself.
Otherwise, whe'd be crowing about how well you are doing in your recovery.

Heh, heh. Rosie probably has done 12 steps, OK. She was just going to the
basement to do the laundry when it happened.

That sure sounds like a back-handed allegation that JB is a hypocrite.
