Last night, I visited a "Wellness answers by health notes" kiosk at my
local Longs Drugs store, right next to the pharmacy station inside the
store. I touched the "Health Conditions" box with my finger, then
touched the words "Alcohol Withdrawal", accessing articles about how to
treat alcoholism.

I: Diet: To reduce alcohol cravings, eat more whole grains, fruit, and
other healthy foods. Limit sugar, caffeine, and junk food.
One study compared alcoholics on a hospital diet vs alcoholics on a
special diet that includes fruit and wheat germ, and excludes caffinated
coffee, junk food, dairy products, and peanut butter. 81% of the
special diet alcoholics went sober, vs 3% for the ones on the hospital
diet.

Over The Counter remedies: Take a multivitamin to speed recovery from
alcohol related deficiencies. Also take vitamins B1, B3, and
B-complex. Many alcoholics are deficient in B vitamins. A John Cleary,
MD observed that some alcoholics stopped drinking when taking niacin (a
form of B3) supplements. Cleary concluded that alcoholism might be a
manifestation of Niacin Deficiency in some people, and recommends taking
500 mg of niacin daily, and/or taking B3 intravenously.

Also take milk thistle to help the liver recover from cirrhosis.

Prescription drugs: Ask your doctor about ReVia (which reduces cravings)
and Valium, Xanax, or Ativan (To ease withdrawal symptoms). Other drugs
mentioned: Tenovmin, Inderal. Alcoholics Anonymous can refer you to
doctors who specialize in alcohol detoxification, hopefully ones who are
cheap.

I was in strong agreement UNTIL Valium, Xanax and Ativan were mentioned.

They're all highly addictive anti anxiety medications that nearly every
alcoholic who takes abuses and the withdrawal symptoms from them usually
lands those that abuse them in the hospital for extended stays. Your taking
an alcoholic who's self medicating with a legal addictive non prescription
drug (alcohol) so they can deal with the world and replacing it with a
doctor prescribed addictive drug so they can deal with the world instead of
teaching the how to deal without drugs.
Unless you proscribe to the theory that many in alcoholics anonymous seem to
have about deviation from their primary purpose, which seems to be we don't
give a fuck what you put into your body as long as it's not alcohol.
They're trying to raise the dismal success rate they have lately, when all
they're really doing is driving off the cross addicted younger crowd with
they're crusty old bastard attitudes.

Is this the same Tim who has a friend who has another friend thats
knocking off a friends partner/

Time old bean, you're full of shite.

Treat alcoholism ????
Treat alcoholism is this a joke????

Alcohol withdrawal is very often fatal - should never be done without
medical supervision, although I would agree that a pair of strongwilled
and long sober members using the 'weaning off' method, might be able to
prevent a seizure. Not recommended.

999, or in your country, 911 - oh shite did I mentiom 9/11 sorry I
meant the emergency services. Oops 9/11 was an emergency - aw hell you
know what I mean.

PS I carry two half litre cans of strong cider when going on an
emergency call. I tried it a few years ago with a small bottle of
Absoluut vodka. The bastard had it finished in 2 mouthfuls and recovered
before we got out of the parish. So much for a 20 mile drive to a
recovery centre.
