FAQ for alt.binaries.sounds.spoken-word.12-step.recovery

Q: What is abss-w12-sr?

A: abss-w12-sr is a binary newsgroup for the posting of binary audio
files related to 12-step recovery. Topics can include speakers or
workshops from 12-step meetings and conventions, audio books
related to 12-step recovery, and any other binary audio files
related to 12-step recovery. Also welcome are any other "self-
help" type material in accord with the steps and traditions of 12-
step recovery.

Q: What is 12-step recovery?

A: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) was the first, of what now consists of
over 300 world-wide, 12-Step Fellowships (or programs of
recovery), and are all based on the Twelve Steps and Twelve
Traditions that Bill Wilson, the co-founder of AA, wrote in 1935.
A few of the more prominent 12-step programs are AA, NA (Narcotics
Anonymous), GA (Gamblers Anonymous), and OA (Overeaters
Anonymous). It is estimated that in the United States alone, more
than 15 million Americans belong to a 12-step group.

The 12 Steps of Recovery are the basic tools that the various
group members utilize to help them live and enjoy life, one day at
a time. A few of the goals of "working" the steps include:

" Living life on life's terms
" Profound change in our lives
" Belief in a power greater than ourselves
" Turning our lives over to that power
" Recognizing and accepting our past
" Making amends for the harm we have done
" Giving back what was so freely given to us through service
" A Spiritual Awakening

Twelve-step programs are NOT religious programs. Although most
members believe in a power greater than themselves, they do not n
ecessarily call that power God. That power can be anything from
the recovery group to traditional religious figures such as God,
Christ, Allah, etc. Many members have successfully used music,
nature, or a sponsor (the list is endless) for a higher power.
But because many members refer to their higher power as God,
visitors often mistake 12 step programs as another religion.

Q: What's NOT OK to post?

A: Of course you should not post unmarked off-topic materials,
advertising (spam), cancel attacks, virus infected binaries, and
abusive cross postings. Furthermore, please do not post religious
or evangelical-type files. Although 12-step programs grant their
members the right to choose the God of their understanding, it is
not fair to impose your belief system on others in this newsgroup.

Q: Do these posts violate copyright laws or the Traditions of
12-step groups?

A: Regarding copyright laws, it depends on the post. Some
speaker tapes or CDs are copyrighted while others are not.
And while we do not condone breaking the law, this group is
not moderated and therefore cannot prevent posting of
copyrighted material.

Regarding Traditions, we don't think that it violates any for the
following reasons:

" This newsgroup is not affiliated with any particular 12-
step group.
" Newsgroups in and of themselves cannot be a profitable
enterprise.
" The anonymity of members of various groups is not an issue
since they agreed to be recorded, and their last name is
seldom, if ever revealed.

Q: My ISP doesn't carry abss-w12-sr. How can I get it?

A: Currently, abss-w12-sr is only on a few servers (that's the way it
is for all new newsgroups), but you can request that your ISP
carry it. Typically this is done by emailing the "Newsmaster" of
your ISP.

Q: I don't know how to upload/download binary files. How do I do it?

A: Check this website:
Binary Newsgroup FAQ:
http://matmc.home.mindspring.com/usenetbinariesfaq.htm

Q: What format of audio binaries is best to post?

A: MP3, WAV, WMA, are all acceptable. They can be ZIPped or RARed.
yEnc is also a good way to send. Also, it's a good idea to post
PAR files since many servers have incomplete posts.

Q: I have heard of (or I haven't heard of) RAR (or ZIP, YENC, PAR),
but I don't know how to use it/them. Where can I find out more?

A: Very good RAR (archiving) program - free to try:
http://www.win-rar.com/index.php?lang=eng

For (additional) help with RAR:
http://animeanalyze.tripod.com/rar.htm

For help with ZIP:
http://www.eurekais.com/brock/aazip.htm

For help with yEnc:
http://www.yenc.org/

In addition, I recommend using Xnews which has a built-in
decoder/encoder for yEnc. I think that it is the best newsreader
out there - much better than Outlook Express - and it is easy to
configure, and FREE!

Download and/or learn more about Xnews here:
http://xnews.newsguy.com/

Very good PAR (parity) program with info on how and why to use:
http://usenethelp.codeccorner.com/SPar_Primer.html

Q: Can I find out more, or comment on this newsgroup
A: Yes, you can reach me by email: na_anonymous_e@yahoo.com

Not quite. The 12 Traditions didn't exist for some years beyond 1935.
And each fellowship has subtle differences in both the Steps and
Traditions.

Surprisingly, relatively few members seem to fall within this
category!

Sorry to hear that Bob, perhaps you should find a different meeting (or
fellowship). One of the reasons I set up this newsgroup is because so much
was freely given to me

I don't think Bob's going to different meetings would change other's
sobriety. He has helped me out here though.

He has a talent with the red pencil, and weeding out errors. He can find
things that seem to slip by others. May I suggest you pass stuff by him, if
he is willing to read them of course.

Best of luck with the binary group.

Shaw
