Daily Reflections

WHAT WE KNOW BEST

"Shoemaker, stick to thy last!" . . . better do one thing
supremely well than many badly.
That is the central theme of this Tradition [Five]. Around it
our Society gathers in unity.
The very life of our Fellowship requires the preservation of
this principle.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 150

The survival of A.A. depends upon unity. What would happen if
a group decided to
become an employment agency, a treatment center or a social
service agency? Too much
specialization leads to no specialization, to frittering of
efforts and, finally, to decline. I
have the qualifications to share my sufferings and my way of
recovery with the newcomer.
Conformity to A.A.'s primary purpose insures the safety of the
wonderful gift of sobriety,
so my responsibility is enormous. The life of millions of
alcoholics is closely tied to my
competence in "carrying the message to the still-suffering
alcoholic."

Question o' the day fer the educated...do YOU know what "stick to thy last!"
actually refers to? Correct answers will be invited to share in the million
dollar lottery I've just won, which came as a big surprise since I never
entered a lottery to begin with. <wink>

Hi Al,

The quote is "Shoemaker, stick to they last". A "last" is the model used by
shoemakers when they make the shoes.

the rest of the story is the a Greek (?) painter said this to a cobbler. As
I remember the painter put on display a painting he was rather proud of and
was criticized by a cobbler, as apparently he had painted either too many or
too little lace-holes/hooks on the shoes. The painter immediately took the
painting down and went to correct the error.

The next day the painter put out the same painting and cobbler noted the
shoes had been corrected. Then with now self-acclaimed wisdom, the cobbler
proceeded to criticize the legs on the painting. The painter's reply was
"Shoemaker, stick to thy last." The painter's reply was that the cobbler
should stick to shoemaking.
