View Full Version : Temper tantrum
Well, I haven't drunk in a week, but last night in a rage I shredded up my
math textbook. I've been behind in that class since it started. We have all
these problems to do and each one is taking me 40 minutes! I talked to my
sponsor, I'm dropping the class. I'll use the extra time for my own
recovery. Maybe next semester I'll be a little more sane. I just won't
graduate from JC this semester.

Hey matt,
As a guy who has been a full time college student for 10 (F)(#$#@O)(@&)(*#ing )
years, i'll tell you, burning holes in your stomach isn't worth it!
I don't have a single text book without a broken spine or something torn out of
it. Or a single apartment that doesn't have some damaged woodwork from me
launching one of them acorss the room!
If you hate it that badly (and I HATED it that badly too!), good idea to drop
it, get your shit a little more together, and try again.
When I started my recovery, I looked at it like "it's going to take a little
longer to graduate, but at least I plan on LIVING a little longer" IMHO, it's
more important to stay off the sauce, just accept the fact that it's going to
take you a little longer to get out.
Anyways, the economy sucks anyways, and so it's not a good time to look for
empoyment.
if there is any SPECIFIC question about math, i have studied math through
parametric geometry--glad to help if you e-mail me privatley. Since i'm
totally broke, I found that I can always trade tutoring services for a cup of
coffee or whatever I need when the chips are down!
also, my degree is in chemistry and physics, and also a minor in religion and
English. (talk about CAREER STUDENT!), not bragging, anyone who pisses away
10 years in college can have that too!
good luck my friend. staying off the booze is one hell of a lot more important
than getting all cranked up about a math class.

A moment of exciting clarity for me was when an old timer in AA said:
Alcoholics Anonymous does not teach you how to handle alcohol, in fact,
in the big book of AA alcohol is only mentioned in passing. What
Alcoholics Anonymous teaches is you is how to handle life.
In an instant I realized I had always had it backwards, thinking that I
would "get my shit together" and *then* I would sober up. Doesn't work
that way, ever.
Matt, it gets easier as time passes. In fact, once you have some self
respect, a little temper tantrum can be good for laughs.

LOL A common misunderstanding, and not entirely unknown to myself. I always
thought I'd eventually learn to control my drinking. "For the last two dozen
times I've taken a drink, it's become a two-week binge. This time I'll certainly
remember how horrid it is and stop after the first night" And some people have
the nerve to call me a pessimist!
It's not very often you meet an alkie who 'gets his shit together', i.e gets a
good job, mends relationships with the family and friends, balances economy etc.
and then, after all this repair, out of the sheer joy of having it all in mint
condition, comes to AA in order to sober up.

Matt,
If the worst thing you did was tear up your math textbook then you did
alright. Of course you'll have to buy another one next semester, but no big
deal. The only big deal is to not drink. Besides, you can probably get a
deal on a used book that some "norm" used.

Keep tearing up textbooks. Lots of them. Then begin pumping iron in
order to constructively "vent" your anger. Next thing ya' know, you
could be a bodybuilder and have a shot at a governor's job. From there,
maybe even a bid for a recovering presidency. Ain't the US grand?

Naw, it takes a good month at AA, easily, first before one has it all
down.

hey bobby, that's a good point. A stupid text book! I have wrecked
RELATIONSHIPS, i wrecked FREINDSHIPS, I wrecked a lot of things that I'm
trying now to restore.
it's a book, maybe an asshole for a professor.......
nothing to get really bent over.
Got to get off the comp here. there is a storm, and I would rather not blow up
another modem!

hey, no need to be a smart assed prick about it. The guy is not drinking, and
had some problems that FREAKED HIM OUT and was looking for a little advice.
I've been in those same situations, where the stress and problems of being a
student are killers. It isn't funny, sometimes some of us just lose it and
freak out on "tantrums", and feel bad later.
So chill out with the sarcasm, ok? He consulted his sponsor about things, and
took a hit for the team. I think that is punishment enough.
I found that the single most fucking annoying thing in my life, both post and
prior recovery, was sarcasm. I always took i the way it was meant--to piss
someone off. and to this day I have no time or use for it, and only find it
destructive.
Or else maybe I might move back in with mom and get a fucking enormous dose of
it instead?

After a period of not drinking, my first temper tantrum took me by
surprise. Am I not supposed to be doing better? I grew to realise
that recovery from alcoholism, and the associated growing process,
really has very little to do with simply not drinking.
