I am an alcoholic, my name is Scott.
I had almost 5 years sober by working the 12 steps of A.A. I decided
to drink again last Sept. and have been on and off again since that
time. My sponsor had guided me through the steps, but I failed to keep
working them in my everyday life. I cut back to 1 or 2 meetings a
week. I never really tried hard enough to be a friend to anyone. I
havent yet challenged my fears
or relied on God to see me through them.
Today is my first day sober, and I am hoping to use this group to give
and receive some encouragement while I am at home doing, otherwise,
nothing better.
I look forward to meeting some of you.
And to, possibly, having an extended recovery family. Have a good day.
Hi there
Welcome to the group. I hope you enjoy the banter here.
Try not to look at the previous few months as a complete failure, after all
you did learn something didn't you? As the song goes 'pick yourself up,
dust yourself down and start all over again.'
I have had six months sober and it has been the best six months of my life.
I don't go to AA but I don't shout down anyone who does....each to their
own.
I devised my own recovery plan, using bits and pieces from all sorts of
recovery plans. What I do know is that I am powerless against alcohol and
for me there is no option of drinking in moderation. Been there, tried it
and got several tee-shirts ect.
best wishes, keep posting and look forward to getting to know you

I have found this group of great value maybe check out AA groups on
line as well - they are there 24/7.
I am sure that there are many things during those 5 years that you are
happy with, and some that you are not. Build on the former and learn
from the latter.
Welcome to the family. Like all families, there are a few bun fights -
just pull up a seat ;-)

Hi Scott,
Obviously something worked for 5 years. That is fantastic.
I find keeping myself busy - not just for the sake of it but doing useful
things - helps me to keep my mind off me - and at least at the end of the
day I can point to something I have achieved. Not drinking is one of them. I
have really worked hard at relationships - kids, friends, acquaintances, the
woman on the check-out. In the past, I was so wrapped up in myself, I
didn't notice any one else. I'm a people person and drinking kept me
isolated.

Hi Scott, 5 years sober seems like a lifetime and a half to me - ive
never manged more than three months. I guess this is a very personal
thing to ask, so im not expecting an answer, but what was it that made
you pick up your first drink after all that time. I'm not expecting
details here - i just wonder, was it a bad life event or over
confidence, or something else.
nice to meet you,
dan

Do you think it might have been something else you did wrong apart from
cutting back the meetings? do you think it possible that it could be AA that
got it wrong? we all make mistakes, AA doesn't? Still having to attend more
than 2 meetings a week after 5 years of sobriety, doesn't sound like being
sober to me. Maybe you should try looking at recovery from a different
perspective. Maybe try something else as well as AA. Even moderation has to
be done in moderation.

Hello Pauly, glad to meet you. As far as having to go to meetings, I
cant think of a better way to keep my memory fresh. Nor can I find a
better opportunity to give some hope to other alcoholics. As far as
moderation goes, I never have wanted to drink like other people. I got
drunk the first time I drank and I got drunk the last time I drank. Half
measures will avail me nothing ! Keep us posted on how well moderation
is working for you. Thanks for your reply, Scott

welcome back into recovery scott!
i am glad that you did not die, and got back to us, to share what happened.
this is a great group of folks, but remember THIS IS NOT AA, so not everyone is even working on recovery, seems they are
here to argue with everyone.
there are online AA meetings:

pauly,
"having to attend"
i have over 20yrs of sobriety and still go to meetings!
i INTEND to go to meetings for the rest of my life.
it is the best tool, i can use, to continue to improve myself, and do HP's will.
it is where i meet newcomers, and share what worked for me.
it is where i meet with "my family of choice", and receive unconditional love.
i think you have a misunderstanding about this.

Now wait a minute.
You probably didn't consider your words well before posting.
I'm not AA. I am working my own recovery. And I certainly don't
bother to argue with everyone.
Just thought it should be pointed out that just because one
isn't AA, one doesn't necessarily fit your description above.
I'm certain the generalization on your part was merely an
oversight with no slight intended to the others of us with whom
which, you have had no problem. :)

i have NEVER posted that my way is the only way, because i don't believe that at all.

Jumping in with a welcome to the group, Scott. Six months ago I lost a 5
year sobriety, and prior to that by trying to do it "my way" lost a 9 year
sobriety date. But, I didn't lose the sobriety I'd gained during those
years.....it just changes my anniversary date. And, sounds like you've
learned from your experience as to what you have to do......You have been
off the wagon for awhile, which shows you how progressive alcoholism is, so
you need to be ever viligant and work your program.
Keep posting.....lots of nice folks here ready to reach out.

I had two and a half years before the Dragon persuaded me to try
"controlled" drinking. It didn't work.

I am not trying to moderte my drinking. I was referring to moderation in
other things like going to meetings. We need to look at other areas of our
lives to see where our addictive behaviour is affecting us and ohers.
