As Bill Sees It
Perception of Humility, p. 156

An improved perception of humility starts a revolutionary
change in
our outlook. Our eyes begin to open to the immense values
which
have come straight out of painful ego-puncturing. Until
now, our lives
have been largely devoted to running from pain and
problems.
Escape via the bottle was always our solution.

Then, in A.A., we looked and listened. Everywhere we saw
failure
and misery transformed by humility into priceless assets.

No matter how shitty I've felt while sober, I've never come nowhere near the
depths I was at when I still drank. And the best part is I'll always have
those experiences to look back at and notice I'm doing just fine.

I went to a meeting last night and a friend of mine said he had once gone to
a friend of his to borrow money so he could drink away the blues of not
having any money. For some reason the friend, a non-alkie, had had trouble
understanding the logic of this. :-)
