Tried everything: C.A.S, psychiatrist, Campral, detox, librium, valium,
all to no avail. I seem to have an overwhelming compulsion to drink.
I drunk when i was in a relationship,i drink now i'm single. I drink
every evening. I dont know why i do it! I've done it for so long it's
like i don't know how to live life sans alcohol.
I don't know what to do, anyone?

Try reading "The Doctor's Opinion" in the forward to the book "Alcoholics
Anonymous".
Chapter three "More About Alcoholism" explains a lot of this also...

Only you can decide when you are miserable enough to say ENOUGH. There
is a solution. You gotta want it and go get it.

You just get used to do something you've done every night. If I didn't
have HepC I'd be slamming down cocktails every night. Do you want to
quit drinking? If so there alre places that detox you from alcohol in 4
to 5 days. But that's just drying you out. Unless you really want to
quit then that would just be a waste of both yours and theirs efforts.
I've found a lot of drinkers just go through repetition It's more like
making a drink and not thinking about it until you're on your 5th drink
before you even realize it. If you're serious about wanting to quit
then you should check out those quick detox centers to see if you think
they're right for you.

I'd guess getting yourself face-to-face, in live contact, with somebody
whose been where you're at now might break the cycle. You're probably
isolating yourself, especially since you're single now. Having somebody
aware of your plight might give you some extra motivation. Or, just relax
and let your stopping date be determined by an external force like an
arrest, serious accident, or death. Your choice.

btw, the 'trains to brazil' moniker -what's that all about?

Very astute, yes i am isolating myself.
I have been at this point before: questioning whether i really want to quit.
"trains to brazil" is a song title.

Thanks, but nothing astute here -it's a common trait of problem drinkers.
That's another thing I really gained from going to A.A. meetings -hearing
stories from others, and so many of them made me think, 'Wow! -can I relate
to THAT...' It was reassuring to see I wasn't some very different person in
a unique situation -the booze makes us unpredictable in a very predictable
way, so to speak. I hope you do go for it on your own, man.

And that's a really cool video. thanks! -Fred

Share your plight with those closest to you. Avoid being alone. Keep very
busy and active, so busy you actually forget about drinking (yes it is
possible). Avoid hunger, thirst, anger, boredom, sadness. get plenty of
sleep, learn to meditate. suck on something sweet when you get cravings,
drink ice cold milk. Socialise but avoid events where alcohol is present.
Give yourserlf something to think about other than your cravings, take up
hobbies, buy a puchbag an knock seven bells out of it when you get stressed
out. Talk, tell people what you are thinking, what you are worried about.
Most importantly, handle it one day at a time

All these things are what I did. I'm an alcoholic but doing these things
have kept me sober for 15 months.

Good luck

excellent reply. You are right. The only thing that made me not want to
quit was that all of my friends are coke fiends and alcoholics from
Hell. I never dumped any of them though. Just told them to make sure
the booze was out of site and no doing lines in front of me. I still
have my same friends. They respect my decision. To me dumping friends
just because I'm changing my lifestyle seems quite cowardly. And I'm
sure someone on this site is going to slam me for what I just said. If
they are truly your friends they will accept whatever decisions you
decide to to make.

Spot on. I never dumped any of my friends, I just told them the way things
are. They accepted me for what I am. They are good friends, probably better
than I deserve.
