View Full Version : How does my brother evict his alcoholic GF?

I apologize if this is the incorrect group for this post.
My brother (~50yo) has unfortunately hooked up with an abusive alcoholic.
She (~50yo) has been an alcoholic for many years and has been in and out of
rehab. She was sober when they met 3 years ago. They have lived together a
few years now in his home. She has been steadliy drinking more heavily.
Since mid summer, when she was fired from the lastest of a string of crappy
Wal*Mart type jobs, she has been blotto.
She is intoxicated for days at a time and often drunk by 10am. My brother
has had the phone disconnected, because she makes abusive phone calls to
him and people he works with. She is a verbally and psychologically
abusive. Accuses him of all sorts of infidelities and shortcomings. Any
money she gets her hands on goes for liquor.
Her family is in another state and has no interest in intervening or
assisting in any way. She herself denies drinking and denies being drunk.
My brother has had enough of this woman and wants her out of his house and
gone from his life. But he doesn't know how to proceed legally and is
concerned that if he does get her removed, she may return to do some type
of violence.
Surely someone here has been in a similar situation. Any advice (even
predicated with "IANAL") would be appreciated.

Your close to the right group.
He has to take the action to get her out if other
requests for her to leave have failed. No easy out.
Set a move out date, Pack her things, Change the locks.
Get a restraining order maybe if there is a
risk of harm. There will be some court costs for that.
Some cities offer a paid court order evication where
cops have limited means to remove a person or arrest them for 24 hours.
It's his job .. Sorry. No *easy* way . It a messy way to end ..
but the police/courts are of little help in civil suits ..
until there is some law broken. Then useless until it happens *again*.
Good luck.

First of all your brother needs to grow some balls and become a man !
If he owns the house just lodge a complaint with police and have her
removed...and have her property removed from property !
File for a restraining order.

Yaa.. I kind of had the same subliminal thought too.
Sometimes it's hard to make that leap to being a hairy
broad chested animal brute and throwing someone out
on the streets.

reasons i don't frequent the nonsmoking newsgroup
in which i actually quit with. Henry don't think
much of me, nor i think much of him.

I found swapping smoking for gum was much easier than stopping drinking,
the gum obviously being a tailor made replacement. For about my first year
off the tobacco, people I see pretty regularly even asked occasionally if
I was still off the smokes.
Took me about a decade to shudup about being off the drink though, so
there was never any need for folk to ask about that in the rare chance
anyone got to get a word in. That God business in the AA steps sure
gave me plenty of room to needlessly complicate things for myself, while
endlessly earbashing others. Oh, well, with benefit of hindsight, I can't
see how someone as important in my estimation, (or at least with the
potential I estimated was lurking in me,) could have stopped drinking and
stayed stopped any other way. http://tinyurl.com/8py4u
Anyway, after running out of cash and captains about 4pm one New Years Eve
and unknowingly having had my last ever drink, now is an opportune time to
be wishing you, Bry, along with the lurkers and verbose of this crew, a
sober and fulfilling '06 too; if that's what you want more than anything
else in this life. If yer don't want sobriety and fullfilment more than
anything else on earth, I aint gunna waste a wish on yers.
Ps Mias, if you're peeking, that goes for you and Ms Mias too, but it's
gotta be for every second for youse two, doesn't it ;)

i can't say what will happen with the new year's.
Of course i wanna do the right thing. As far as
quit smoking i just quit one didn't really prepare
to quit, i smoked my last cig and am like well i'm
done not really knowing if i'd be smoking the next
day. I've quit many times like that before the
last time, but the last time i stayed.
With the drinking i go back and forth on wanting
to quit and wanting to drink. During these
periods i have willingly brought myself to AA
meetings because i wanted to go.. One of those
times i hope it clicks. As of right now i can't
really say.
