View Full Version : Other groups besides A.A.
I've been going to A.A. meetings for almost 3 years. The program has
some very positive benefits and has helped me in lots of ways.
I also believe that there are LOTS of very dogmatic and nasty people
who are extremely intolerant and don't seem to have a clue. There is a
whole lot of denial in A.A..
Can anyone recommend any other recovery groups that have meetings? I'm
in Central,New Jersey.
Thanks,
Sy

Not aware of any real choice other than meetings in another town. I'm
also in NJ, and it surprises me how different the faces all are just
by driving a few miles.
Of course, you might get the same message of ignorance elsewhere. But
you might not. Where I am (north NJ) there's a big treatment centre
nearby, so the AA rooms seem to have been dealt a heavy influence from
the teachings there. Some of which is, I'm afraid, nonsense.
Not sure quite where you are, but I might personally be tempted to
check out one of the AgnosticAA meetings around the New York area.
Can also be helpful for me sometimes to quit just listening and start
doing.

Doesn't sound like you've been hitting your knees enough lately. He sees
you when you're sleeping. He knows when you're awake.

You'll get over them, once the steps begin to work for you. After all, why
are you there? For you, or for them? Or both?
Maybe staying on, and being better than them will eventually rub off on
them, then, once they're better, you can move on and start your own recovery
program.
Just a thought.

sweetie,
a joke loses something when you have to explain it, but for you? anything!
rosie
Santa Clause Is Coming To Town
(Chorus:)
You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout,
I'm telling you why;
Santa Clause is coming to town.
He's making a list
Checking it twice
He's gonna find out
Who's naughty and nice
Santa Claus is coming to town.
He see's you when your sleeping
He knows when your awake.
He knows if you've been good or bad
So be good for goodness sake!
(chorus)
With little tin horns
and little toy drums,
rooty - toot - toot and rummy - tum - tums,
Santa Claus is coming to town!
Curly head dolls that toddle and coo;
elephants, boats and kiddie cars too,
Santa Clause is coming to town

I see. so you took this quote:
"Doesn't sound like you've been hitting your knees enough lately. He sees
you when you're sleeping. He knows when you're awake."
And related it into a kid's Christmas song?
Your spiritual bankruptcy is SO apparent.

There are ACOA meetings and Coda meetings
You could also join a yahoo mailing list, the best one I found is
on the topic of sexual addiction
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/astarttorecovery/
[the reason I like this one is that sex is ont something that one is
going to completely avoid, with a substance one can easily be
a 'dry drunk', stopping the substance is not the same thing as
recovering]
Hope that helps

There are other recovery groups for alcohol also. Websites available for
different groups are: For LSR or Lifering Secular Recovery -
http://www.unhooked.com ; Smart recovery- http://www.smartrecovery.org There
are others also, but both of these have meetings in some parts of the
country. LSR has an excellent email list that you can gain access to from
the website and smart has a message board. They both have online meetings
also. Personally I get what I can from various sources.

Really? I'm sure this is merely a temporary reprieve. With your
"spiritual condition" you just wont be able to stop yourself from
crosssposting again.
Nevertheless, pertinent crossposting being within the guidelines of
netiquette, is your god(HP) promising to remove your proclivity to
shout, which is not?

When not busy downgrading AA's "God" at step three, you're
re-writing step ten; in promotion of thee.
