View Full Version : What is this group?
Hi all, I'm Laura and I'm an alcoholic. What the heck is this group? I read
through the last 5 or so days of posts and have found myself confused about
what is happening here. Is this group in support of recovery via the 12
steps of AA or not? Is this group using the Big Book or what? I stumbled in
here hoping to find some drunks staying sober. Perhaps I have and perhaps
that's why I'm confused. For those that have an issue with the 12 steps, and
don't like what Bill and Bob were about, to bad. It's working for me and has
been for 13 and a half years.
If I'm in the wrong place can some one kindly tell me where I might find
friends of Bill W.? (be nice)

hahahahahahahaha
That contradiction's too funny, looks like you belong here; if you
can just let go of the dreaded disinclination:)
Welcome!

I'm relatively new myself, but apparently this group exists solely for the
pleasure of "Robert McGregor" so he can have somewhere to shit on everybody
and feel superior to the rest of us. I'm glad to be part of such a fine

If your looking for a pro AA group you're in the wrong place. sadly i don't
think AA has a newsgroup. As for the people on here, not all are in AA and
not all can credit AA 100% for their recovery. My sobriety is down to AA, my
gods and myself. AA helps a lot of people but scares off a lot of people
too, especially those of religions other than Abrahamism based religions.

Hi Laura.
Many of our recovering in AA and share posts here and there. There are a
bunch of unpleasant posters who seem to want to see their own postings and
recognition, moreso than they want to help others. There are a few of us
who chime in when we think we can do another drunk some good. I haven't
found a better newsgroup and if you can look past the bitter posters, it can
be OK.
Rosie is the closest to doing any kind of "approved literature" work posting
excerpts from either Daily Reflections or the Big Book but we thank Rosie
for her service as there is no formalized kind of book study or anything
like that. Congratulations of your 13+ years. I'll have 6 months next
Tuesday and so far (fingers crossed) it seems to be working for me. I go to
3 or 4 meetings a week and check in (lurk) here every day if I can.
Good luck - welcome.

Sorry, the correct question was "What is the stars?" from "Juno and the
Paycock by Sean O'Casey. On the other hand, that's an excellent Douglas
Adams quote.
Anyway, welcome to the group, such as it is. It's a place with a lot
of sand and slurry mixed in with lots of water but it occasionally does
yield a nugget or two. Actually, with a little practice (that you probably
already have from being in other net groups) you can spot the attack dogs
who will bark and snap at anything that is new or moves. Some may surprise
you. Bob, for instance, frequently seems to be abrasive but it's usually
part of cleaning off the coat of crap in which most of us wrap our
pronouncements. There's a reason that Brillo pads work.
No, it isn't predominantly an AA group. They're next door at
alt.recovery.aa -- there are quite a few of us, however, that do find AA and
meetings and such to be useful to a greater or lesser degree. We are,
however, mastly just what you said that you were looking for: some drinks
staying sober. Do you have things to contribute? Do you have things with
which we can help? Frequently, the two amount to about the same thing.

It's not AA Laura, although some of the recovering
people do AA, some don't. Were just people who
wanna sober up or stay sober for most part. I'm
not quite there yet just preparing myself and
lurking for the most part.

Another Cultist Subliminal Message from AA: Boo

Hi LRM,
You found a usenet group that agrees on very little and generally
argues over the same pointless shit over and over. A group of wandering
folks
primary goal is unknown, whose purpose is vague and for most part
sober. Sound familar ?
Welcome aboard.
People seem strange when your'e a stranger, welcome aboard. Robert McGregor
used to piss me off too with his big words and all but I think the guy has
a good heart and he definately knows his big book and the program of AA in
my opinion.Rosie is the secretary of the group and Robert is the President.

Poor Bastardos!
"Get those hammers out of this house this instant, I'll have no one
getting hammered in my home, thank you very much!"..... "And take
that glue out with them! I won't have you sniffing drugs in my home
either!"..... "Don't you realise A GLUE is A GLUE is A GLUE?"
Of course, all that went without repeating, "No, not over there, HP®
wants that built over HERE." ..... "NO, NOT YOUR WAY ..... this MUST
be built HP®'s WAY, dont you know that's what I'm *PAYING* you for!"
Sure, chances are they might end up in here, desperately seeking ...
........ Carpenters Anonymous!

I've been to several AA meetings all over the place, and what I really liked
about the meetings was the down-to-earthness of the people there. Most were
very friendly & welcoming, plus many knew what they were talking about, as
opposed to counsellors who've only ever studied it in books. (Not that
counsellors can't be friendly or welcoming, just that it's obvious when
you're talking to an alkie who's been through it, as opposed to someone
who's only ever studied it). (Although sometimes an academic viewpoint is
good too if you want a different perspective).
However, what I didn't like about AA was the fact that it was too watered
down God-wise in my opinion.
I know this might sound odd, since many people are put off AA by the
slightest mention of the word "God", but in my opinion if you're going to
use the word "God" (and the origins of AA are in a form of Christianity
after all), then you might as well use the word "God" in the Christian sense
of the word. In other words, a being who created the universe, and who knows
us all inside out. Otherwise, what's the point of using the word "God"? The
word "God" then becomes meaningless.
I've been in AA meetings and heard people say things like "The number 11 bus
is my God, because it gets me to the AA meetings".
OK fair enough, as a *figurative* use of the word "God", and if the number
11 bus keeps someone sober then great, but the number 11 bus didn't create
the universe. The number 11 bus isn't *literally* God -- anyone can agree
with that statement whether they believe in God or not (since even someone
who doesn't believe in God is aware of the Christian *concept* of God, even
if they don't agree with it).
But having said all that, if you're sober down to AA, then I'm glad.
I hope you continue to remain sober.
Love, light and all that bollocks
Keep it real
