Hemingway was a genious who was far ahead of his culture in place and
time and forever alienated from it by virtue of his sophisticated
awareness which took him far and wide in his attempts to escape from it.
He was a tragic figure as well to be so great and to be brought down by
something so simple as the bottle. There must be many other unsung
heroes out there who compare to him but who are locked up in an
obsessive desire to escape from their own pain through self medication.
Surely God must recognize these tragic people and hold great compassion
for them.
