Ok, I admit it, I'm a little bit out of the loop.

The last time I was in a residential drug treatment program (Tarzana
Family) was early 1976 or late 1975 ( dont remember exactly, possible
brain damage). Thats what happens if you stop using drugs.

Was there an abusive enviornment then. Absolutely. Sleep deprivation,
Attack therapy via the Synanon Game, uncomfortable stress positions
(standing or kneeling on the wall). It all existed.

That stuff was a legacy of Synanon and the Psychiatric community bought
into it. Therapuetic Communities I think they called them.

In later years it appears Straight Inc. and its spinoffs used the same
techniques. My only contact with live in programs the last decade has
been those with a 12 step approach. I havent seen that kind of abuse
there. However in Oregon they have a boot camp within the prison system
and that was getting popular the last few years also.

So fill me in if you can. Is this kind of abuse still going on in
residenital treatment facilities in the name of "therapy". If so, which
ones and what kind of abuse.

Doug,

note the group name alt.recovery.addiction.alcoholism

You might stop in at alt.recovery.addiction. I'm not trying to run you off
or anything; however, you seem poised to evangelize the shortcomings of an
addiction recovery program which is not focused on alcoholism.

Many of us did in fact follow that road also, but for the most part, (and I
do not speak for group), in this newsgroup we tend to address that part of
our illness/condition/behavior (take your pick as to cause - even we do not
agree on this) as it relates to alcoholism.
