Hi Darren. Hope you aren't pissed at me. I was exactly like you were in
those first weeks and/or maybe even years. So far, you haven't said anything
in here that me or someone else hasn't felt at one time.
I did notice that you got defensive. That is ok. I still do it. I have
gotten better at not doing it so much. I learned that it was ok to get
angry. I was also made aware of how I reacted to that anger. Most of the
time, when I was drinking, I would show those MF's. I'll get drunk and then
call them in the middle of the night and cuss them out or I'll show them and
I will stay home from work today, get drunk and make it hard on the person
that pissed me off the day before. On and on and on.
What I am trying to say is that you said you hadn't grown a shell yet. I
learned that people are not always going to say or do what I want or expect
them to do. Things are not always going to go my way. I do get angry about
it. It is how I react to that anger that used to get me in trouble. I used
to drink over a lot less than what was said to you in that thread. You
probably did , too. That is a good start that you didn't drink over any of
it. It isn't much different in here than it is in real life. Maybe your
growing that shell a little bit? Now, when someone in here pisses me off I
try to stop, take five or ten and them reply and hopefully I don't sound to
damn angry. I am more aware of my actions, now. I am also aware that I am
not always right, either.
I will say this, Robert used to piss me off a lot. God, I thought "how can
he be such a jerk to me." Today, I am so grateful that he did call me on my
crap. Robert made me more aware of my behavior and called me on my whining
and I have whined a lot in here through the past five years. I believe that
down the road you will be able to look back at that thread and laugh at
yourself. God knows I have laughed at some, no, a lot of my past post and
what I said.
Take care and don't drink.
Gail

chattering endlessly in my head. It made me very tired (that and going to
bed at 3 am :)) and a little testy. when I was drinking I was angry all the
time. With me it's like a jeckyl and Hyde thing but I am a lot more patient

Here is a web site that will help explain what is and could possibly go
on with you in the coming weeks/months. Might help you. There are three
parts to it so be sure to read them all.
Take care.

Is it really necessary to emphasize all of the
'potential' negative sides to sobering up? It's
a proven fact that if someone obsesses over any
given symptoms, they'll start developing those
symptoms. What are you trying to do with this?
"Better keep a bottle of Jack handy just in case

Hi Scott. For a long time I would go to AA and hear people say that if I
didn't drink things would get better. I thought that things would get better
immediately. No one told me that it would probably get worse before it got
better and I had no idea what the heck was going on. I couldn't keep my
balance, I couldn't sleep, I couldn't concentrate, I couldn't eat, I was
angry, etc. etc. I found out about PAWS in treatment, not AA. AA people
would just say that it would get better, just don't drink, go to meetings
and get a sponsor. Even so, I still didn't know why I was feeling the way I
felt and for many years went back to drinking after experiencing some of the
symptoms of PAWS. There is no way to sugar coat getting sober. It ain't a
bed of roses those first days, months and even years and I, for one, will
not give someone the impression that it is. Knowing what is going on with
you can be helpful. If someone reads about PAWS, starts developing *ALL* the
symptoms, then they may have another problem such as hypochondriac(sp).
Best,
Gail

if your like i was in early sobriety, i CRAVED sweets, and although
some say its not ok to satisfy that craving with ice cream, that is
EXACTLY what i did.
after my AA meetings, we would go out for ice cream.
i don't do that anymore, but at the time, it really helped.

22 days today, Rosie. It's been a struggle but I won't say any more on that
because fate will come back to bite me. :) on the 16th I will celebrate my
first month of sobriety assuming nothing goes wrong between now and then.
EEEEKK one day at a time. Bad thoughts go away, bad thoughts go away..

Ja, but when I AM drinking, guess what? I can't keep
my balance, I can't sleep right, I can't concentrate,
I stay angry and I can't sleep! And you sound as if
you're saying, 'ok, you stopped drinking successfully
for a long period of time but guess what? you're going
to suffer PAWS which is a "Syndrome". And 75% - 95%
"PAWS Rate"? Wow! I bet someone really did a comprehensive
study to come up with those numbers! LOL

Those are at least things that they can do with certainty. So,
now the "recovery industry" throws some silly thing out there
to sell books prolly bilk insurance companies some more if
they can. Now you can stay up all night worrying if you've
got PAWS. And the thing that amazes me is that the only
cure for "PAWS" is .....wait.... more booze!

Yeah I know some others who fell from grace and took a drink and they tear
themselves apart about it. Ok it was a bad thing to do but nobody got hurt
and tomorrow is another day. :)

Exactly. So I couldn't figure out why I was still feeling all those things
and I wasn't drinking.

And you sound as if

I never said for a long time and I don't believe the web site did either.
Also, no one is going to suffer ALL the symptoms and some may not suffer any
or for very long at all. At least, not the confusion, sleeplessness appetite
and a few more.

And 75% - 95% "PAWS Rate"? Wow! I bet someone really did a comprehensive
> study to come up with those numbers! LOL

So, you don't believe in treatment and statistics?

Well, I might have paid for the advice while in treatment but, I gave it to
Darren freely and at no charge. I am not trying to make any money here. Just
wanted to help Darren be aware of SOME of the things that could go on with
him. Heck, he can even bring it up in his meetings and get their feedback.
Maybe if I had known some of this I might have asked about it in AA early on
and gotten the same feedback from the people in AA about what can happen and
how I would feel and what I might have been going through as I did in
treatment. Then maybe not.

I don't know but, you and Scott didn't read that same thing I did. I did not
see anywhere in the article where it said to take up drinking again.
At least I don't promote web sites to buy drugs for coping. ;)
Please keep us posted on how your all ways of staying sober works for you

I see nothing wrong with taking SSRI's or tranquilizers
if I need them. Wellbutrin is supposedly very helpful
for some people if the drinking was caused by depression
in the first place; especially if the 12 Step programs
are really a form of self psychoanalysis with a Spiritual
Twist.

ROTFLMAO! Yeah, make sure to look out for those PAW symptoms --might
stock up on a garage full of beer to help you out with that insomnia
and lack of coordination.

Listen, Honey. I'm sure that you mean well, but, Please
don't get me too tedious. This is from the website you
posted the link to.

"Use of alcohol or other drugs can temporarily reverse the symptoms of
the damage. If alcoholics drink, or drug addicts use, they will think
clearly for a little while, be able to have normal feelings and emotions
for a little while, feel healthy for a little while."

Can you see how tempting then it would be for a sober alcoholic
to want to have a nip if he was "having feelings of insanity".

Wow! Is that a loaded question? Yes, I believe in statistics, but,
I also believe that there should be a little narrower of a margin
there. "Treatment"? If you mean, detoxing in a safe way, counseling,
support groups and a proper diet, sure I believe in "treatment" if
"treatment" is necessary. I'm not against it anyway. Who Would be?

Yeah, see, it was all about the PAWS thing, I think. She'd obviously
took offense to something, I'd just forgotten what it was!

And if I upset you and Darren, then I am sorry, too. No, it isn't about the
paws...LOL
I got tired of scrolling through your alls post to read one liners that
didn't make any sense to me so, I quit. But hey, I am a hillbilly (cunt). ;)
I may have missed out on a lot by not reading them all. Then to, maybe
not...;)
You take care.

I don't usually get too wrapped up into these Usenet argument
things. People get their feelings hurt and it's also a colossal
waste of time.

Sorry, Ms Gail! No more fighting! Ok?

Gail. Would you do me a small favour? If I do something to upset you again
then please tell me. Don't just shun me. This way I can try to make things
right.

Take care. :)

I didn't think that I had shunned you. I admit I haven't read all of your
and Scott's post. I didn't know that you had seizure's and all that. If I
had read them all I might have had more sympathy and all that. I am truly
glad for you that you have a month and almost a week of sobriety. Really!

I will tell you the same thing I told Darren. I am guilty of not reading
everything that you post. Maybe I should have. I don't know.
Scott, I am guilty of caring whether or not you stay sober. You remind me a
lot of my son. I get pissed at him, too. ;)
I do get pissed and I did react in a negative way to you and Darren. Can't
promise I will read everything but, I will try to let it go if it makes no
sense to me. OK? As long as it makes sense to you two.

Don't worry about it Gail.I don't tend to read all posts either so if your
guilty of it then so am I and I celebrate 5 weeks of sobriety today and as
you know its very hard work. Thanks for your reply and take care. :)

What does that matter?

And when I figure out your modis of operandi, maybe
it will work! But, you can't put out a fire with
