There's a new tool available for people who're trying to overcome
alcoholism.

A drug that has been widely used in Europe and has shown promising results
in U-S trials is now vailable nationwide. The makers of the drug, Campral,
say it is the first new drug to treat alcohol dependence in nearly ten
years.

Dr. Barbara Mason of the Pearson Center for Alcoholism and Addiction
Research headed up U-S studies. She says the "overall picture of Campral is
very promising." Mason says it's the only medication available that works by
restoring an imbalance in the brain that's caused by alcohol dependence.

Meanwhile, a Brown University professor who studied Campral says it seems to
help people stay away from alcohol for good. Dr. Robert Swift says in most
studies, twice as many users abstained from using alcohol for up to a year
as compared to those who had a placebo.

Has anyone heard any more on this drug? Sounds interesting. Any opinions?

Knowing nothing about the stuff, my opinion would mean nothing. but I DO
remember my drinking days and wonder how a chemical could quell my liking
the effect of alcohol. My thinking went along the lines of, "Just one won't
hurt me any. I'll cut down tomorrow".

OOPS, I'm no researcher. If the pros say the stuff works, I have no business
arguing with them. In fact I say more power to them!
