The Gal/Guy in the glass.

When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
and the world makes you star of the day.
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,
And see what *that* one has to say.

It is not husband, father, mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass;
The person whose verdict counts most in your life,
Is the one staring back from the glass.

Some people may think you a straight shootin' chum,
And call you a great girl or guy,
But the one in the glass says you're only a bum,
If you can't look yourself in the eye.

That's who you need please, never mind all the rest,
Who is with you clear up to the end.
You have passed your most dangerous, difficult test;
If the one in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
countless pats on the back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heartache and tears;
if you've cheated the one in the glass.

Bob,

A great response. I know what you've said is true.

Consequential to a long series of bad choices, including continuing to drink
long after I deemed myself an alcoholic, extricating myself from problems of
my own making was a long and arduous task.

Most everything else faded into oblivion, compared to my success in not
drinking.

All too often my unfulfilled yearning was for a sign of genuine progress in
any other respect. I solved that problem by identifying one aspect of my
life that could be changed for the better instantly. It was as simple as a
decision, not even to stop smoking, but to stop discarding empty cigarette
packets out of my car window.

From day one, I had worthwhile progress, on which I could, and still can,
navel gaze to my heart's content. Other subsequent "instant" changes turned
out to be merely temporary. That led to the gut level realisation my finite
nature has an inbuilt resistance to worthwhile progress, and a lot more
patience with myself as I pursued recovery, 'till it was transmuted from
hope to realisation.

However, right to this day, I know from those experiences with liquor and,
of all things, cigarette packets;-) that immediate progress is always
available, provided I am willing to identify, and pursue it.
