These "Addiction Alternative" people want to sell you stuff. You can see it
at: http://www.aa2.org/products/alcoholismsoftware2.htm They claim that
the program that they are selling was "developed under a grant from the
National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism."
Their basic junkie program is so old that it comes on a 3.5" diskette and
will run under Windows 3.X! Nevertheless, they want to charge you $49.95
for it.
They have "A professionally Guided-Self Change program" for $149.00.
Nevertheless, even though they are selling you their program, they publish
the following disclaimer:
"WARNING: Neither the developer of this program nor I can guarantee your
ability to achieve and maintain the goal of moderate, non-problematic
drinking. For some people even one drink is too much. Typical client
characteristics predictive of greatest success at 12 months and long-term
follow-ups of two to eight years, include; less sever alcohol-related
problems (see "Habit Check-Up's) and a shorter duration of problematic
drinking (under 10 years). Overall however, the data from over 30 controlled
research studies of BSCT, provides compelling evidence of its effectiveness
for what some characterize as 'early stage problem drinkers.'"
I have not enquired to determine whether they also sell snake oil.
For myself, I'm going to believe the disclaimer and not the claims. "For
some people even one drink is too much."
