View Full Version : Ping Manchester men
Pauly and Jonathan?
I'm coming to Manchester on 9 August - managed to avoid it so far - will
bring my raincoat....could you recommend a couple of good restaurants
please...must serve a vegetarian option...not bothered about the state of
the beer or the wine list...used to be the first thing I looked at. What a
difference a year makes!

I would definitely
> recommend Marco Pierre White's Restaurant on the first floor of the Lowry
> Hotel (Not Lowry centre in Salford) Its in the town centre, just off
Chapel

> Raymond Blancs' Le Petit Blanc does fantastic pan fried calves liver, (off

it.
> The Lime Tree in Didsbury is also good. If you like Curry you must visit
the

China

Hi Pauly,
Thanks for the detailed reply - quite a gastronome (for a northerer) aren't
you? With your permission I'll copy your reply - he raves about
Manchester - I thought it was just him but now there are two of you. I
don't actually like the south much but am kind of stuck here for the moment.

Sorry for the late reply. I don' t eat out in Mcr much atm, but would
definitely recommend. Velvet in Canal St, near Piccadilly station.
The menu is quite an eclectic mix - plenty of excellent seafood and a
wonderful crispy duck salad. The wines (not sure who is going) are
varied, of good quality and low priced, plus plenty of inventive non-alc
drinks.
The staff are friendly, helpful and rather entertaining.
Failing that, it is the right area for many of those 'all-you-can-eat'
chinese buffet - just bring the stretch pants!
Happy munching!

Thanks Jonathan, that sounds great. I've also had some good ideas from
Pauly so when I return a stone and a half heavier, I'll know who to blame!!
I note your comment about interesting non alcoholic drinks - think I should
start an award for places that offer these? I'm getting sick of "hose pipe"
cola which is all some pubs offer non drinkers.

One of my favourite is grapefruit juice and cranberry with a dash of
lime. Served with plenty of ice. You will wonder why you ever drank
alcohol it tastes so damn good.
This restaurant has won awards btw - and can get very busy even midweek
- booking is a must for weekends. Can get a little over warm so I'd
leave the black tie at home. The loos are to die for btw.
Telephone Number is: (0161) 236 9003
this is a little review:
A long - time Canal Street design classic complete with fish tank
embedded in the staircase which leads down to this basement bar. It's
cosy and bijou with plenty of imperial purple decor, exposed brick
walls, comfy well-padded high backed chairs and a quirky and kitsch
homely appeal. It's not hard to see why Velvet remains a firm favourite
amongst local clientele. The menu offers fine and filling unpretentious
food, while the bar gets very lively on weekend nights. Also famed for
the in - toilet entertainment which consists, camply enough, of the QVC
shopping channel on a loop.
Let me know what you think if you give it a go.
Regards
Jonathan

Hi jonathan,
You didn't mention that Canal street is all about outdoor
drinking (alcohol) in the summer. It can be a great place to go on a hot
day. But if you are tempted by lots of young people downing all manor of
alcoholic drinks in the sun, then I'd give it a miss. If you can cope with
that, there are quite a few good places to eat. Though Mash and Air has
closed now I think :-(

This place has the added advantage that you won't meet Moonraker or any of
his ilk there, well you may but face down in the canal. (just read the
disgusting thread - what an asshole, I think he IS drunk)
