Hi, my name is J and I'm an alcoholic. I'm 39 years old.

One morning, 3 months ago, my father found me curled up in a ball on
the floor of my room. In the previous 2 days, I had drunk 4 bottles of
scotch. I was rushed off to emergency for a stomach pump and blood
transfusion. I survived.

The state I'd got myself into was reach after just 4 months of
drinking. Prior to that, I'd been sober for 6 years. Prior to that,
I'd been an out and out drunkard for 13 years. This period of
drunkardness was interspersed with short periods of sobriety. But, the
pattern was the same. I'd be stretchered into a sanctum, plied with
librium, stay sober for a few months, then start drinking again.

When I came out of hospital 3 months ago, the next day I went to first
AA meeting. It was a great relief to finally confront my alcoholism. I
now go to 2 meetings a week to share my experiences and to listen to
the experiences of others. It is important that I learn from others on
how to keep sober. Hopefully, I'll learn something from this group
too. I've a strong desire to keep sober. Drinking again is not an
option. Next time, I may not be so lucky.

Thanks for listening.

J

Dear J
It is so good hearing that from you. I went to AA for about 2-3 weeks and
one night realised -I do not HAVE to drink again. Such a simple thought...
Kind regards
Mias

Hi J
Welcome. Yes "...next time..." AA doesn't shoot the wounded who go out and
come back, but you can only come back if your still alive. I've heard it
recommended, and I agree, to go to meetings the way that a person drinks,
e.g. usually daily. Good to hear that you have a strong desire, for your own
sake follow it up with strong action.

Good Work J,

Glad you are here instead of in the bottle. Recognition and acceptance are
keys to survival. Knowing that other people share your situation helps.
They draw strength from you as you do them. You are not unique and knowing
that helps (me, at least).

If anything I write helps you or anyone else at all, it helps me too!

Thanks for all the comments. Very comforting. I have a struggle to try and
keep sober. Even though I had a long period of sobriey, I'd take extreme
measures to ensure this. Instead of sitting in the pub all day, I'd sit in
my home office and learn about the Internet. I guess that the Internet
became my kind of HP. However, this method eventually failed me as I began
drinking. Now that I'm sober again, I've gone back to my home office rather
the pub. I go to AA meetings 2 evenings a week, hopefully this kind of
lifestyle will keep me sober.
