When I was a child I went to a Sunday School run by a lady who repeatedly told me that during my
lifetime, Jesus would come again and when he did, those whom God judged not to have led a good life
would burn in hell for eternity. I was so scared by this prospect that for many years I went
regularly to Sunday School and, later. church to find out what I needed to do in order to be saved
from the fires. I gave up going to church when I realised that many of those who attended services
weren't shining examples of how the Christian life should be led.

Sadly, from reading messages posted here, I have come to realise that some of those who claim to f
allow AA's 12 Steps, fall far short in their personal dealings with others(including myself) of
meeting everyone of these 12 steps.

To those whom the cap fits, I hope you will at some point:

8. Made a list of all persons (you have) harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or
others.

10. (Continue) to take personal inventory and when (you) are wrong promptly (admit) it.

Hey! Wonderful try at a "group" guilt trip. You gotta work on your
technique, tho. We're pros at guilt-tripping.

It must be so wonderful to be able to sit and say that you quit church
because somebody didn't behave the way "you" thought they should. It's good
also that you can dismiss the program of AA because you don't like how
somebody "talked" to you. Convienent.

"For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God"

"We claim spiritual progress, not spiritual perfection."

So, I take it that you'll just remain a drunk until "everybody" else behaves
to your liking, or that life becomes fair?

Thank God for his mercies. If life were fair, I'd have a thousand DUI's and
be in jail forever.

Curious how she predicted the second coming ... people have been
struggling with that one for almost 2000 years!

Some of the churches' saints were somewhat less than "good" people.
St Paul springs to mind, I'm sure there's others. Many, many good
people have never been declared saints.

Precisely!

Unfortunately you can't work anyone else's program for them. You can
only work your own. Nobody works the program until the pain of not
working it becomes too great. But perhaps in prescribing a course of
action to others you can begin to see the course that's right for you.

There's also an important AA message for the many perfectionists ...
"No one among us has been able to maintain anything like perfect
adherence to these principles. We are not saints. The point is that
we are willing to GROW along spiritual lines. We claim spiritual
progress, not spiritual perfection".

That was a strong message for me, because the pain of being imperfect
can sometimes seem greater than the pain of drinking.

Hi again Blue,

I'm beginning to. You'll be pleased to know that as a result of exchanging and following
posts on this NG for several weeks, I now recognise and appreciate the great value of AA's
Twelve Steps. I have recently started trying to follow them. You can rest assured that I am not
trying
to follow them without help.

Hi JB. Can I ask what steps you are working on? It was suggested to me to
start at step one. "We admitted we were powerless over alcohol and our lives
had become unmanageable". I could not work on any of the other steps until I
fully acknowledged and accepted that my life was unmanageable. That did not
happen for me in a couple days or even years. Then, it was step two, "Came
to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity".
That step wasn't as easy as it sounded, for me. I believed in another power,
but I kept thinking I knew what was best for me, not that greater power.
After years of doing it my way, I finally realized I didn't know what was
best for me or even how to recover. Then came step three, "Made a decision
to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand
him". That was really hard for me since I blamed him for all the bad things
in my life. I just knew I was being punished all those years. But, thanks to
the program of AA and the absolute hell I was living in, I became willing to
turn all those things over to a power of my understanding and do my best to
not take it back. It was then that I started seeing a change in my life and
attitude. This did not happen for me overnight or even over a couple of
years. For some, it might happen faster.
If you are still wanting and thinking about drinking, I would suggest that
you work on step one. Do you have a Big Book? Have you been to AA.
No where does it say that I had to work those steps in a couple days, weeks,
months or years. Just to work them. Those first three steps are critical
before even being able to continue the other nine steps.
I do wish the best for you.
I just couldn't continue to do it *MY* way and ever get and stay sober.
Best,
Gail

Damn, I'm really surprised, Gail. You mean you weren't instantaneously cur
ed? You actually had to DO something toward working for your recovery?

You mean you can't just sit and wish and it will all come true like a fairy

LOL..Yep! I tried that way for a long long time. I still have to work on
those first three steps every day. I realized a couple weeks ago that I was
powerless over alcohol and my life had become unmanageable when my son got
drunk. God, it was like seeing me in the past and what I could become again.
Alcoholism doesn't just affect the person who is drinking. His drunk hurt me
and helped me. I only pray that one day he does that first step and does
what it takes to work the other eleven. :)

Yeah...you are right. It is "unconventional" to say the least. Who is it
that is "helping" you follow the steps? I'm guessing it is not somebody
who has worked the steps in an AA program? They were written in an order
for a reason...

How many times have these people you have harmed heard your apologies
previously? Many people who have dried out a bit and wanted to salve their
guilty feelings leaped ahead to steps 8,9, and 10. Many of them reported
later that the person to whom they were trying to make amends didn't seem
like they cared much. Get 6 months or a year under your belt of not
drinking...then see what the apologies bring. People believe what they see
you doing and they will see the change in you..

I think you have either "done" a step or you haven't. "Deciding it's time
to do a step" or "working on a step" is merely mental masturbation.
"Doing" step 3 will make that glass of wine stop calling your name....;>)

Of course and I'll answer. Steps 1, 2, 8 ,9 and 10.

If what I'm doing is unconventional, I'll be expecting to have it explained to me why I shouldn't be

Moon, you are right on it. I had to hear and LISTEN to a lot of things about
myself that I didn't like or even want to hear. I got angry at anyone who
talked to me the way you are talking to JB. Thing is, now I am grateful for
people like you calling me on my shit. I am willing to listen and do what it
takes to stay sober and if that means me thinking that someone is
deliberately out to get me, then I still have a long way to go. It took me a
long time to realize that people were telling me how to and calling me on my
shit because they cared and not because they were out to get me or start an
arguement.
Thanks for the suggestions. ;)

Rosie...please pay attention? JB has already told us a few days ago that

Oh yes. I posted that on the 12th July, exactly one week ago. Gosh, a lot's happened since then.
What evidence have you that my situation now is the same as it was then ?

I'm pleased for you.

BTW, I was very sorry to hear about the deaths of our former mother-in-law, current father-in-law
and old friend from AA. If you would be willing to accept my sincere condolences, I would be
pleased to offer them to you.

Moonraker, I hope you *never* have another week like the one you've just had.

Now, as it's 1.00 am here in the UK, I'm closing down for the night. Hope to see you tomorrow.

With very best wishes

JB
