EU Voting Begins -- Slowly
02.06.2004, 20.55
Advance voting for the European Parliament has begun as sluggishly as
five years ago.
Preliminary figures indicate that slightly more than 80,000 people
voted during the first day on Wednesday. During the last EU elections,
voter turnout on the first day was 83,000.
Eventually less than one third of voters cast ballots in Finland
during the entire voting process in 1999.
Registered voters may cast their ballots by mail or at any of the more
than 800 polling stations around the country. Libraries and post
offices are being used as the main locations.
In some towns in Finland, you can even vote in shopping centres and on
community buses. You must present a photo ID when voting.
In Finland, advance voting lasts until Tuesday, June 8, and in other
EU countries until Saturday, June 5. The main round of voting is
scheduled for Sunday, June 13.
Citizens of other EU countries resident in Finland are also eligible
to vote.
Advance voting for Finns abroad continues until Friday, with more than
200 voting locations in 92 countries.

Red Cross Wants Better Follow-Up for Drug Treatment
31.05.2004, 19.39
A fresh report by the Finnish Red Cross concludes that treatment given
to drug addicts in Finland ends much too soon.
According to the study, the law on treatment for substance abuse does
not mention follow-up treatment, and consequently, there is often no
funding available for the purpose.
The Red Cross feels that follow-up treatment would be a good
investment, and warns that there is greater danger of a relapse if a
person is left alone after rehabilitation.
The study found that 80 percent of those who did get follow-up
treatment were either satisfied, or very satisfied with the care, and
many of them felt that without it they might not have managed to stay
off drugs.
