"It is the first drink which triggers, immediately or some time
later, the compulsion to drink more and more until we are in
drinking trouble again. Many of us have come to believe that our
alcoholism is an addiction to the drug alcohol; like addicts of any
sort who want to maintain recovery, we have to keep away from the
first dose of the drug we have become addicted to."

That's the problem, how do we stay away from that first dose? Why do
some people lose the obsession quickly while others are constantly
struggling and relapsing for years?Like me. People drink to escape
life, face it,sometimes it sucks.I would not have started drinking
again if my company hadn't laid me off,it's like why be a good boy if
nothing good comes out of it?

Dear Jim - The modern version of staying away from that first one will
probably be 'With a mouse in the one hand and a printout of the twelve steps
in the other there is none left to pick up a drink with...'
For myself, with drink and cigarettes I have always asked my HP to handle
cravings, when they occur. He has not dropped me yet...
..
Am playing 'Stand up for the champions by Right said Fred' REAL LOUD and
thinking 'What a magnificent lot of champions we are!' It is Friday night
and the town is glittering and most of us are out of that squirrel cage.
Thank you all for being here for me. Yeah - that goes for you (Fill in name)
and you (Fill in name) too. 'Kids in America' just started. Everythings
happening downtown! The lights and the music are buzing. It is so glorious
to be sober...
Kind regards
Mias

Rosie, do you ever feel you may rely on your sponsor too much? Are you able to
instinctually deal with situations that used to baffle you *without* the help
from your sponsor or someone else?

Again, *disclaimer** I am not taking pot shots at you or digging for a fight.
I honestly, sincerely would like to know your answer to the above questions.

Congrats on 15 years, Mias. Seems weird to not see 14 after your name. I
must have missed it but, when was your anniversary?
All the best,
Gail

when i was new to sobriety, the ONLY time i thought i was relying on
my sponsor too much, was when i was bullshitting myself into
thinking that i had it "all together" and didn't need another
"dependancy".
CLASSIC JUNKIE THINKING!

my relationship with my sponsor now, is much more relaxed, as my
needs are quite different than those who are in their early years.
i KNOW that i would not be sober today, if it had not been for the
relationship i had with my sponsor in the first couple
years..................that is what worked for me.
i did not go back out, because i believed the stories that were
shared with me, and followed the great examples that were shown to
me.
