View Full Version : What gratitude do you have today for being sober.

I'm grateful that I have found a solution that has removed the compulsion I
had to drink for over eleven years.
Gee cant anyone find something similar to share concerning recovery and
gratitude?

I'm grateful that the (pseudo) withdrawal that I went through today was
only the addiction telling me I was going through it; not that I actually
did.
Next?
(I'm not flaming, I'm just finding your past couple posts kinda way out

Hey, that a very positive thing to realize and to share. I've been in that
place also and those lies my addiction tries to get me to beleive can seem
very real at times. Anyone else ever go through this?

Hmm. First thought was "I have no hangover", but this headache is
killing me. Then I thought "I don't hurt all over", but due to some
extra work around the house... I do hurt all over. Then I
remembered that I have my integrity, and that it's been a couple
24's since I did anything to loose that. So for that, I am grateful.

You have a great sense of humor Tono. I'm having a good day also. Every
joint in my body feels like someone is standing on them, but I am so
grateful that this side effects I'm enduring is only this bad and not
combined with one or more of twenty others just as bad.
--I'm also grateful that one of my sponcees has just started their 4th step
inventory.
--Grateful that I can walk, run (please not to far), see, hear, and think
today.
--Grateful for finding a new sponsor to work the steps with again. Yes
again.
--Grateful for seeing a newcomer cry his eyes out over the mess his life has
become at this mornings meeting and asking for someone to take him to a
treatment center to detox (three guys drove him to the healing place in
Raleigh, NC. Costs nothing for food and lodging, not allowed to work, must
focus on recovery, and he can stay a year if needed.)
Grateful for the healing place. No its not affiliated with any religious
organization. Paid for and supported by corporations, trusts, and a few
grateful drunks and their families.
Life is good, Live sober and live free.

If you ever dare to try taking those 12 *simple* AA steps
http://tinyurl.com/yqxmk as suggested, instead of complicating things
and "working" them with a sponsor, you should notice that sponsors,
and even meetings, don't get a mention in any of those steps.
Jeez, given I did, even you might actually recover, too; if you
abandon absurd aspirations of fucking Sainthood!

Julie,
Your post suggests to me that you don't think it's necessary for
alcoholics who have chosen the Steps as a means to recovery to make
those Steps a part of their daily living routine. Is my thinking
correct ?

my gratitude was a little slow this morning.
i woke up with immediate fear about not selling this house, owning
two homes forever, and NEVER getting back to my career of choice.
i was waiting until we moved, to start back to school, to start work
on the next level of my education, thinking i just wouldn't have the
time to focus on it...............WRONG!
its been a whole semester, and we're still here, and i have too much
time on my hands.................
gratitude, gratitude,
gratitude......................................... ..................
.............
well, i just got in from my two mile walk, and have the whole day to
run errands, have lunch with friends, and just "be
lazy"................i am a fortunate women, and i am grateful.

Certainly a lot less gratitude than I have for going from diapers to
short pants. Gotta make the most of that one, for they say with old
age, diapers can again become the norm!
However, I've gained the promised "new freedom," thus confidently
learned how to leave alcohol out of my life for as long as I live in
solutions instead of in problems, taking most things "one day at a
time."

I was in a simular place five years ago. My daughters had moved out, we
wanted to sell the house and build on a 9 achre lot next to a friends farm,
and I had just completed my first semester as a Junior year at NCSU. I had
so much to do and sort out it seemed overwhelmeing at times, but I was so
thankful for being who I was (sober) and having the ability to get up, and
show up, for life.

I'm grateful for having a choice to not drink today and the oppertunity to
welcome suffering alcoholics to AA when they arrive.

OK :^) Two of the many things I have to be grateful for today are the
Serenity Prayer and the willingness I have to blame your bizarre
behaviour these past two days on the drugs you're taking.

They say clothes make the man, but when graduating to short pants, I
think it's really what you do with them, or should I say, *in* them,
that really makes all the difference. :)

I appreciate your willingness to try this approach to the discussion group
JB and your comment concerning me as well.
I have gained a great deal of gratitude over these last two days. Mostly
from my attempts to have at least a few conversation threads that deal with
recovery and not arguments over personalities or beliefs.
What amazes me is that when I started to ask people to stay on the topic
yesterday they failed to realize that *they* are the ones who are trying to
alter something and not me. I have only posted my "Stay on the Topic"
comments on threads which I began because I was tired of having to read
through all the other garbage posted simply to be able to read some of the
feedback I needed and requested.
Instead of replying to the topic posted they change it by commenting on
everything BUT the topic that had been posted. Why this is such an
impossible task for such an intelligent group of adults to comply with fails
all logic. NG members could at least respect the "topic" being discussed if
they can not respect the comments of those who attempt to discuss recovery
topics here.
All members have a right and ability to post a topic for discussion here so
there is no reason to derail a thread when they can start their own.

Jeez, Ron, I had long forgotten that aspect of parenting, where lauded
success for growing "bigger" can be unfortunately counterproductive
the instant an accident occurs.
Untimely praise can be like that wet blanket, proverbial, on innocent
enthusiastic emotional growth, can't it.

Did some members of the steering committee suddenly changed the topic in the
middle of the discussion to talk about the something entirely different? I
think not, and if they did *some poor soul* would have asked them to keep to
the topic at hand so the issue could be resolved.
Thats all I am asking from group members here and my polite requests will

LOL JB responded according to your own demands for staying on topic,
and you went completely off-topic by bitching about other people going
"off topic".
For your information, there is only 1 topic here. That is
"alt.recovery.addiction.alcoholism".
Yes this is off-topic too, as is the assertion that you're acting just
plain weird.
So, to get back onto your topic just for your peace of mind, even
though it has almost nothing to do with the newsgroup's topic, I have

Poor little thing; on top of regressing a bit, she's now come down with
diarrhea. Some people are sicker than others.

I've always found drinking a happy substitute for all the back pats I
(think I) deserve but rarely get. I'm somewhat surprised, in fact, to
find I'm still a motivated person, even without an infantile reward in
hand. It's really hard to say "no" to such readily available instant
gratification.
I'm trying to learn the same lessons I'm trying to teach my small
children. Yikes.

Don't give me nightmares! I have an accepted offer in on a house,
and my current home is getting listed this Friday! Actually, homes
here are selling like hotcakes. I'm hoping the same for mine. And
I hope yours sells also.
If things work out as planned, I'll be going from this place with
2.5 acres of plain old ugly grass, to a home on 14 wooded acres,
with a pond and a creek. (I'm a tree hugging nature freak) You can't
see *any* neighbors from the new place! The best part is that I'll
have no mortgage after selling this place! I complained and
complained how this area was getting to populated. Now it's working
for me with the property values going sky high. I'll be going from
25 more years of payments, to NO more payments! It's a very nice
thought! I'm getting out of the rat race. Moving to where land is
cheap and life is simple. Screw the 40 hour work week! I have a
life to live, I don't want to waste it working.

What a novel concept. Even if you charge a token fee, your prayer list
of HOUSE SELLERS is a fascinating, yet practical demonstration, of
applied humanitarian concern!
Little wonder you reject the Christian God, and the horrible glut He
put on the mansion market:- John 14:2 "In my fathers house are many
mansions."

Indeed. I think it's called "living". Tough to do sometimes,
especially where money or other people are involved.
