I am struggling with my 'allergy.' After attending marriage counciling a
number of years ago, I was sober for three years, then, in a fit of
stupidity, began drinking again. I've been to AA, but fail to remain sober.
I think the counciling session made me really realize that my life was out
of control, and, at the time that seemed to be enough. As a ugly prideful
man, even the first step seems far away to me now. Any comments?

Suggest you get back into AA, find someone who's taken the Steps, and
see if they'll take you through them. If you're willing to do
everything the first 164 pages of the book says to do, whether or not
you like it or agree with it, you need never drink again. You can
even then become free to disagree with aspects of the book :)
