Slogans For Alcoholics
One of my co-workers has a severally alcoholic wife. In counseling him,
I have come up with a number of "stop drinking" slogans: Break free of the bottle that is holding you prisoner/captive/is ruining your life! I will not drink TODAY! (repeat every day). Rebel against the bottle! Dear God, please give me the strength every day to not drink alcohol. God indeed is my savior; I am confident and unafraid. My strength and courage is the LORD, and he has been my savior. (Isaiah 12:2 in the New American Bible (Catholic). I can do all things in Christ which stengtheneth me (Phillipians 4:13). If ye have faith...nothing shall be impossible unto you (Matthew 17:20). If God be for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31). Throw your heart over the bar, and your body will follow. A bottle cannot make love to you. Other ideas: Keep pictures of loved ones in you wallet and look at them whenever you feel an urge to drink. Wear a cross (or Crescent or Star of David) and grasp it whenever you feel an alcohol craving. Put up bulletin boards saying "Don't Drink!" |

Why make a career or a religious conversion out of it? Your friends wife need only to admit that she is powerless over alcohol and that her life has become unmanageable. Having identified the problem...., the solution is simple. Quit. That will "strengtheneth" her more than a bunch of slogans. If she hasn't *reached* the point of understanding the impact/cost of her drinking the slogans will just be a useless pain in the ass. |
