Doing a little drinking again

I used to drink a lot-- more than a quart of whiskey per day. I did this for
about 10 years. Around 5 years ago I quit drinking, quit smoking, bought a
bike and lost 40lbs. In the past year, though I have been socially drinking
on some weekends. At first it was no issue-- drank on Saturday got up on
Sunday and all was good. Now I get up the next morning and feel fine but
sometime between 24 and 48 hours since my last drink I end up having severe
panic/anxiety/withdraw type symptoms that can last for a day or two Any
ideas why this is happening? Is because of my past excessive drinking that I
am going through like a mini- detox everytime now?

Alcoholism is a progressive illness, it gets worse, never better.

I Think you're about right, it sounds like now when you drink your brain
and CNS are expecting the onslaught they received in the past and you're
experiencing mini withdrawals.
Something to do with GABA down regulation?

R Jay,
I experienced a time in my life much like this. It was part of my
denial and I was convinced that I could once again drink socially.
Especially after I did it successfully for a few weekends.

In my case, when those anxiety and withdrawal symptoms appeared, it
wasn't long before my disease told me that a couple of drinks would
make them go away.

To make a long story short, it wasn't long before I was back to my old
routine of daily drinking. You can save yourself a lot of problems by
doing what you did 5 years ago. Lay it down. Once you get past those
couple of days, you'll never have to feel that way again.

R Jay,

If you are suffering (consciously or not) chronic anxiety, or some other
problem that will need to be taken care of before you can comfortably
maintain longterm moderation.

Congratulations on your 5 years of abstinence. Incidentally how much
were you drinking socially?

I would be the same way if I drank any alcohol. That is what keeps me
from drinking. This isn't because of the excessive amounts I have drank
in the past, that is just the way I am. I have been a bit over a year
now without a drink. First time in several years that I have had a
continuous year of sobriety. Alcohol is just not worth it to me.

That, and well, you got older too. ;-) You clearly defined cunning,
baffling, and powerful for me. Thanks for helping me make today #1500
sober.
