Is it safe to just stop?

Hi all,
I seem to recall a counsellor telling me I had to reduce my drinking
gradually. Apparently it's dangerous to just stop. I drink about a
litre of wine a day. I would find it easier to stop altogether like I
did with smoking, cutting down just doesn't work it creeps back up
again.
Advice appreciated,
Shelley

Shelley,
I'm not a medical professional or an addiction counselor, so I can only
tell you about my own experience. I drank at least that much a day and did
so for years before I stopped. When I stopped, I stopped cold and did not
have any physical complications. I did the same thing when I quit smoking.
In each case it was easier for me to just say to myself "I don't smoke" or
"I don't drink" than it was to try to cope with cutting down because cutting
down made me think about it *more*.
Have you discussed your present condition and intentions with a medical
professional or an addiction counselor? They might be able to give you more
insight into whether you are at risk for complications.
Good luck,
Dan

Re: Is it safe to just stop?

i would suggest that you discuss this with your
doctor........................i was drinking far more wine than that daily,
along with bourbon, and quit cold turkey! however i WAS being monitored by
a medical professional!

stay in touch!

It is but some of us had no choice.

Go see your doctor. Stopping completely can be dangerous. If you find the
only way to get out of it is to stop completely then seek medical advice
first.

Thanks for all the advice. I have decided not to drink tonight. I'd like to
think forever but one day at a time.

This is my third night without a drink. Not sleeping too well but otherwise
doing good.

in my early sobriety, my friends in AA came along and made some suggestions.
in the evenings they would take me bowling, or out for a round of golf. the
exercise helped much with the sleep.

Re: Is it safe to just stop?

Congrats!
I quit cold turkey on March 6th after being an alcoholic for 20+ years.
Too bad I had to lose my family before I straightened up. Drinking
wrecked my life.
Sleeping was hard at first. I was shaky for a couple of days and had
some really bad smelling night sweats (is that normal?) for a couple of
days. Other than that it's been OK.

I had that for a while. It will sort itself out but keep yourself occupied
and away from booze temptation.
