Anyone with alcoholism find spending "out of control"?
Anyone with alcoholism find spending "out of control"?
Is it typical to not have a concept of/be able to budget according to ones finances? |

Drinking or not drinking? If someone has the ism, they may turn to other compulsions after quitting, or for that matter while drinking. Spending on extravagances to "feel better" is not uncommon, although the other side of the coin is to become cheap and miserly. We need to reward ourselves in sobriety IMO. Perhaps we never really learned how to live within our means and it becomes more painfully obvious in sobriety. |

Re: Anyone with alcoholism find spending "out of control"?
"Shopaholism," or whatever you want to call it has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do
with drinking. My ex wasn't a drinker but boy could/can she shop, and so could/can I. What this had to do with the booze, I'm unsure. Certainly a 'drinker' can make bad decisions around purchases as well as a non-drinker. In my humble opinion it's important that I don't attribute every negative characteristic I have to drinking. Sobriety has clearly show me that ther are just as many f***** up people out there who never touched a drop. Go figure. someone in need wrote: > Anyone with alcoholism find spending "out of control"? > > > > Is it typical to not have a concept of/be able to budget according to > ones finances? |

Re: Anyone with alcoholism find spending "out of control"?
Lets say a person pre-alcoholism was very organized financially, not
spending beyond their means and being able to budget well. With onset of alcoholism it seems money evaporates. ie; spending hundreds on skin care products and not having rent money as a result. Re: Anyone with alcoholism find spending "out of control"?
When I first got sober, I started to buy crap from ebay. I had alot of money all of the sudden ! After 2 or so months, I happen to catch a 20x20 or Newlines TV show that was talking about how ebay has turned many into *gaming* fools or gambling junkies. ebay you *win* an item by gambling your next *bid* . Gambling Junkies. Addicts. In rehab, they warned us that cross addiction is possible .. the inner mind has been to use to being rewarded with your chosen fix, there is a period or opportunity that an alternate subsitute can return you to your old patterns, Take a puff of dope, bang. Your back drinking. Given up crack ? have drink and your be crack whore again, I canceled my ebay account. Went to a meeting a shared my findings. Everyone said "Ya .. something like that happened too" |

shopaholism...lol
Like the Gentlemen said..it's all part of the ISM. And it has
everything to do with staying away from the first drink. though maybe not for long. If your like me and drank for many yrs. before finally putting it down, One day at a time then something must fill that void..wwhether it be healthy or not. I drank to change the way I was feeling. Feelings Sucked!!! So many times in order to change the way i was feeling I would go shoppng. or maybe I'd pick up a hooker, or gamble..it dosnt matter. I didnt like the way I was feeling so I chose "unhealthy activities" to change the way I was feeling. In the case of the spending I couldnt always afford to spend,or bought things I really didnt need. The problem is... It didnt work any better then the drinking did anymore. I still wound up feeling shitty about myself, Shame, Guilt, Regret. Broke. And that can bring me closer to a drink. It wasnt till I hit bottom in sobriety that i truely began to work the steps..to be aware of my actions and what drove them....That is what a 4th and 10th step is for..to take a personal inventory..why am I doing these things.??Who am i hurting, who have I hurt. do I hurt my family when I overspend. To say that Over shopping is not a lagitamate topic for AA is Wrong. Whatever will cause me to pick up that first drink IS a lagitamate topic. Regardless of what someone in the room thinks. I choose for my own sobriety what I need to talk about, no one else. later ,chris |

Gross Drinking Behavior: They begin to drink more heavily and more
often than their friends. "Getting wasted" becomes a habit. When drunk, they may develop a "big shot" complex, recklessly spending money, boasting of real and imagined accomplishments, etc. http://www.nh-dwi.com/caip-222.htm On Wed, 31 Aug 2005 23:14:29 GMT, "Alco" <darren@dazze.net> wrote: > >"someone in need" <nospamplease@somewhere.com> wrote in message >news:kl49h1pdbndmg09s5i2fttvfgootncq72d@4ax.com.. . >> Anyone with alcoholism find spending "out of control"? >I don't really have money to spend than i did when I was drinking but now >i've stopped i eat and i spend more on things for my home but i wouldn't say >my spending is out of control > >Darren >> >> >> >> Is it typical to not have a concept of/be able to budget according to >> ones finances? > |
