For Mias: '12 Step Recovery Music'
Excerpt:
"12 Step Recovery Music" "This album is a unique collection of songs crafted around the principles of the Twelve Steps (12 Steps) of Alcoholics Anonymous and its many related organizations. The CD is recorded in a variety of musical styles from pop, to R&B and country. The lyrics of the songs have been crafted around the principles of the Twelve Steps (12 Steps), rather than only one person's subjective experiences. Many of the phrases found in the Twelve Steps (12 Steps) and used in all the various programs have been paraphrased in the songs on this recording. Someone not familiar with the Twelve Steps (12 Steps) will enjoy the songs just for their positive messages and good music, but will not recognize little phrases or meanings. However, people familiar with the program will say, "Hey that's the Fourth Step," and it will mean that much more to them. * But the lyrics are not didactic or preachy, they tug at the heart. Because they focus on the principles of each step, the songs can be used in any of the programs which base their recovery on the Twelve Steps (12 Steps)... no matter what the addiction or compulsive behavior might be. The recording, like most Twelve Step (12 Step) meetings begins with The Serenity Prayer which has been crafted into a song. The album continues to unfold around other steps. For instance, the second step song is entitled A Higher Power." http://www.cqkmusic.com/song8.html |

I wonder if there are any songs that weren't written with any 12 steps / recovery in mind that have poignant lyrics? Has anyone got any good "inspirational" songs they like to listen to? The song I like to listen to the most is a piece of classical music, The Lark Ascending by (I think) Vaughan - Williams, no lyrics in the music though! It's just a good piece of music that makes me feel very relaxed and invokes a feeling of a "Higher Power"... |

Welcome to the group... Mias, a long time sober AA member, has been reading aloud to his stepson, who is new to recovery. I recently mentioned to him that music and the arts drive messages deeper into long term memory, strengthen learning pathways, so I thought that this music collection might interest him, and give Mias a break from reading aloud...in fact, he's been reading *loud* so he might be hoarse by now : ) > Has anyone got any good "inspirational" songs > they like to listen to? I find 'The River' (The Moldau) by Smetana inspiring, here's a description: "The impetuous flute lines that intermingle at the beginning, slowly joined by the rest of the orchestra and broadening out to the main theme create an unmistakable picture of rivulet joining brook and stream joining river. By the end, the river has become a majestic body of water" |
