Anxiety & Alcohol

Hi
I have an anxiety problem & am seeing a Psychiatrist.
I had a painfull breakup with my girl in October, i didn't drink as i was
depressed & anxious & booze makes this worse.
As time as gone by & i'm healing slowly, still pain, but slowly. I've got
into my old ways, at evenings i have some red wine & then more red wine, but
after i eat i don't drink.

When i don't drink i feel healthy, i don't get sweats i don't feel my blood
is boiling & my face doesn't turn red, i hate that. I exercise regularly &
after a good run i crave a beer.

I know that before i crack open a beer or a wine, i will feel better in the
morning if i don't, so how can i stop myself, will power i don't have as i
say to myself that every one else i know does.
I see no mates as they all drink in the pub, so i am alone. I've met a new
girl, were friends & she like s a drink & the warm weather is coming, we'll
go cycling & have a beer at the end of it, so i'm stuck between a rock & a
hard place.
Any advice welcome
Gary

Welcome back Gary, I've been wondering how you were doing since your
last visit here.

If you're isolating yourself from friends at the pub, and may be about to
lose a potential great girlfriend, I wouldn't at this point turn to A.A.
anymore than I would join a monastery. I'd rather laugh with the sinners
than cry with the saints. And unless you truly are an alcoholic, I mean
heading for the gutter, don't cut off your head to cure a headcold.

Re: Anxiety & Alcohol

Hi Neuro & Rosie
Well, i have found myself wanting to drink at about 5pm
each day & after exercise especially.
I'm trying to save money for a holliday, so i am not visiting the bar &
anyway, i don't want to get back into that rut again.
I believe i am an alcoholic, although if i crave a drink, but eat a large
meal instead, i then won't want to drink.
Fred, i am lonely because i don't visit the bar, this is all they do, the
only social place. I believe my anxiety will improve if i stop totally, but
if my anxiety goes away, i'll be happy & start drinking again.
I can go out with this girl & not drink at all, just tea or coffee, because
i'm clearer & don't get stuck for words.

Thanks & hope you are all ok.
Gary

Re: Anxiety & Alcohol

JB,
the examples given in the BIG BOOK for alcoholism are only the "tip
of the iceberg"...........................i hesitate to tell someone
that do NOT qualify to be an alcoholic, that is their job.

gary,
have you read the BIG BOOK yet?
why not read the first 164 pages, and see if you relate?

http://www.recovery.org/aa/bigbook/ww/chapter_3.html
http://www.recovery.org/aa/bigbook/ww/chapter_5.html
were the two most important chapters for me in the beginning of my
alcoholism journey.

not everyone qualifies as an alcoholic, remain honest with yourself
and others, and your answers will come.
