To get or not get a sponsor

was wondering...
if one were to be an alcoholic, find AA, go to meetings, and stopped
drinking for a good amount of time as a result of finding AA and it's
Program, however, they've never really had anyone be a sponsor to/with them
within their 5 years of sobriety, should they still consider looking into
trying to get a sponsor? I know that sponsor's don't keep you sober, so
what would be the positive into getting a sponsor now, after 5 years of
sobriety without one?
Just curious for feedback....

See, Melia. http://tinyurl.com/3fx9u
With the added wisdom and prestige of having a sponsor, you, too, can
delete God from AA's copyright material, and hope to get away with it.
After all, God doesn't work;-)

If you didn't think you needed to get a sponsor why would you bother to even
think about this question?

AA is not a program that was designed to be done alone. The steps clearly
say "WE came to believe...Made a decision to turn OUR will....Admitted to
God, to ourselves, and to ANOTHER human being the exact nature of our
wrongs....WE tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice
these principles in all our affairs. We did this together not alone.

Having a sponsor gives me someone who knows the bullshit I have tried to
pass off as the truth in the past and provides me with someone I can trust
to give me the feed back I need to remain honest and sober.
AA's how it works says that we seek spiritual progress and the AA program is
designed to keep us moving in that direction. Being my own counselor and
advisor is what got me to AA and asking and allowing others to help me has
kept me from this previous path of insanity.
Hope you find what your looking for.

Dear Melia - Speaking just for myself I never got as far as getting a formal
sponsor. I am far too egoistic and a know-all to be under one other persons
'control'. What did however happen was that I would have different questions
and problems popping up, through the years, and I would discuss this with
different people in the group or outside, whom I felt was best suited for
that specific area. I would, for instance, respect one person for their
spiritual path and staying sober and another for their business skills and
staying sober and yet another might have done steps 4 and 5 'the right way'
in my view etc. In a way the whole world was my sponsor and whether that was
right or wrong, good or bad is now water under the bridge. Truth be that I
would in any case accept advice from a person whom I respect and no one
person could ever fulfill that in all areas. I also felt that it was placing
too much responsibility, for my sobriety, on another individual, if I
formally 'appointed' a sponsor. At the time that I went to AA one also had
the phenomena of many 'old-timers' abusing from Codeine to Tranquilizers and
clamouring for people to sponsor so that they could 'prove' their own
sobriety and complete their own ego trip. Then there was the sexual issues
where 'sponsorship' became a blanket for relationships of various shades and
colours. I personally believe that a good sponsor can do wonders for a
newcomer but also that there are few old-timers who appreciate their
sobriety enough to take up the role of sponsorship in a responsible manner.
At this stage I should say that the abuses outweigh the advantages of
'formal' sponsorship. Nothing wrong with the idea but plenty with man who
has feet of clay...
Kind regards
Mias

Given the 12 steps, and entire Big Book was published for the benefit
of those with no face to face contact, that's one of the more
reprehensible dishonest spins propagated by the "sicker than others"
in the AA community.

http://anonpress.org/bb/Page_72.htm refers to taking step four alone
"We think we have done well enough in admitting these things to
ourselves."

With AAers just waiting to gossip, just like Julie did gossip here
http://tinyurl.com/3gpjq about the male (that's no surprise is it) at
her 12 step call, who knows who could be drunk in a month or so, and
spreading our best kept secrets around the local bars! No wonder the
comprehensive suggestions on who we share our step five with refer to
most everyone *but* AA members. http://anonpress.org/bb/Page_74.htm

I'm confident Melia knows better, but if anyone else wants more
evidence than that, go to one of their AA groups and say you are ready
for your step four, so need an inventory meeting, where together you
can all thoroughly take a searching and fearless moral inventory of
each other!

Bob
