Has anyone ever heard of Smart Recovery meetings? If so, how are they
different from AA? Thanks

From the little I know about them, they basicly take the god or "Higher
Power" out of recovery and add science in it's place. AA itself doesn't
frown on a person taking medicatons for a phsychological illness, but
many of AA's (snotty, holier than thou type) members treat someone who
is using prescription drugs, *as precscibed* and not abused, as someone
who is less than them, and they are *cheating* at recovery. Smart
Recovery utilizes modern science, including prescription drugs if
needed, and they continue to *change* as new scientific developments are
made.

I was just at a "LifeRing" meeting, which I believe is similar, but
don't qoute me on that. Unfortunatly, the meeting is new and there was
only 2 people there, including me. We sort of just bullshit about our
past and our particular problems with AA. Maybe soon there will be
enough for a real meeting.

For one thing there are over 450 AA meetings held in Wake County, NC each
month while there are less than 10 Smart Recovery meetings in my area.
Anyone else like to comment?

I forgot to add that they deal with all types of substance abuse, not
just alcohol.

Has anyone ever encountered anyone else who recovered from alcoholism
using the SMART techniques, or even understood what "alcoholism" is
and how it differs from "alcohol abuse"?

a program that emphasizes self and self reliance as a key to recovery. the
basic principle: our thoughts, how we feel about them and how we react to
them..finding an alternative action/behavior. a fairly straightforward
behavioral approach. ('members' are not referred to as alcoholics or
addicts.)

It seems to me that AA's programme also aims to change behaviour. I
think this because in working Step 4, I have come to better understand
which of my thoughts and behaviours most likely explain why I have so
often not been able to cope well with life and why I have so often
disliked myself. These have been my reasons/excuses for drinking and
for doing other things which I believe have harmed me. Having
decided these things, I have come to believe that if I do not want to
stay as I am, I'd not be doing myself any favours if I stopped
working my recovery programme.

At this point I'm thinking that the purpose of all recovery programmes
is to change behaviour. If I'm wrong maybe someone will explain why .

FWIW I think it likely that there will never be a single recovery
programme that suits everyone.

<snip>

After "disliked myself" the words "and other people" should have
appeared. In omitting these words I was not being dishonest merely
forgetful (g)
