The reason why it is difficult to give up alcohol for alcoholics is
because the underlying biochemistry of alcoholism is more powerful
then your free will. Thus the problem cannot be willed away.

It is only when we start to understand that the underlying
biochemistry of addiction and how to manipulate it that we can recover
from alcoholism. It is a matter of treating the underlying illness
that hads addiction as one of its symptoms.
